This fight is often brought as controversial win for Bowe. Was it really?

Scores were 6-4, 6-4, 7-3 all for Bowe.

ABC analysis Alex Wallau said he and fellow commentator Dan Dierdorf had Bowe winning by "a fairly wide margin."

I've recently watched the fight and I scored it 6-4 for Bowe, can't see it closer than that. 7-3 or 6-3-1 would be fine also.

From LA Times article: 'Two judges had Bowe winning by 96-94 and a third had it 97-93, the same as The Los Angeles Times card'

Tubbs did not complain about the decision.

"We both landed combinations, and it could have gone either way," Tubbs said. "But you can't take nothing away from Bowe. I'm a vet, and I've been where he's going."

You can watch it here and score the fight:

Watched it a few years ago and had it clear for Bowe, something like 7-3.
Although Tubbs showed nice defense and slickness, never understood the argument for him.
Bowe was in the control of the fight.

Same for me. Tubbs defended himself pretty well, and avoided Bowe's clean shots, otherwise he would've been stopped. But he was too defensive-minded. It was a bit like his fight vs Witherspoon (which Spoon definitely won, but failed to KO Tubbs). No controversy for me in this fight. And certainly, no 'schooling' of Bowe here

Bowe was the harder puncher but he went to sleep most rounds and got outhustled. Tubbs used a sparring mode hypnosis on Bowe where he was able to make the pace very friendly. On punches landed Tony won. But he was not dominating or even trying to win. Tubbs was just keeping things calm but craftily steeling rounds under Bowes nose. He never pushed Bowe enough to cause a threat. Make him respond as seriously as he needed to. Could easily have been scored for Tubbs but I guess why they didn’t give him the decision. There was no future for Tubbs at that point. He already was a has been.

Bowe was the aggressor and pressed the action but really didn't land much at all. Tubbs shut down his offense. But, Tubb was either moving backwards or fighting off the ropes. Tubbs landed more but didn't have the power to dissuade Bowe from continuing the attack. Tubbs should have used more side to side movement but maybe at that stage didn't have the legs to keep that up.

I remember KO scored it for Tubbs by a slim margin.

I think a Draw would have been fair.

It was a good learning fight for Bowe. He found out he couldn't just mow over all opposition with size and power.

It also showed he had pretty substantial defensive liabilities and could be confounded by a slick boxer.

Good fight for boxing nerds like me. haven't seen it for years I made Bowe a narrow winner nice to see two big blokes moving so well beautiful jabs from both guys .rare to see now no leaning on and grabbing.

I just watched it again. Bowe tried to win in round 1. Tubbs tried to win in round 9. The rest of the fight looked like Tubbs was taking Riddick on the pads catching jabs on his gloves. Bowe leaned on him when when ever he got to the ropes. That was it.

Had it 6-4 or maybe 6-3-1, Bowe.

It was difficult for Bowe BC Tubbs used to school him in sparring. He probably took the fight too soon I wouldn't over think this one. Bowe just didn't like guys able to jab with him too.

I had Tubbs winning 3 rounds 4 at most.

I know Bowe came forward but he was hitting gloves for 8 rounds. I can’t see him winning 6 decisive rounds at all. I don’t think there were as many as 6 rounds that were really clear one way or the other. I saw one round for each fighter that was very clear. Round one for Bowe. Round 9 for Tubbs. The rest were all very friendly touch sparring sessions with Tubbs blocking most of what Bowe was doing.

I haven't seen it in a few years but I remember thinking that Bowe won several rounds almost by default, as Tubbs seemed unwilling or unable to open up. Tubbs avoided most of Bowe's punches but not all of them.

6-4 for Bowe. Tubbs proved have the skills needed to win, but was on the defensive too often.

If Bowe had to go through any number of motivated 80's guys, he could really be given hell.

I can certainly see the jab and size of the only briefly primed Pinklon Thomas out boxing him. Even an old Witherspoon could have given Bowe, and his porous defense, serious problems. We saw an aging Tubbs turn in a fine performance against a young Bowe. I can also imagine a prime Greg Page giving Bowe absolute hell, same with a motivated Buster Douglas, Tony Tucker, Razor Ruddock or even Gerrie Coetzee.

I like Bowe, and marvel at how brightly he shined as a talent for a brief period of time. Exceptional skill for a heavyweight. But he sure is lucky he was matched soft throughout his career and received some of the breaks and lee way that he did.

A vet as slick as Tubbs can make a young contender look bad if nothing else
