Ali. He was still the crowd favorite back then. Holmes is not winning 13 rounds to squeak by with a split decision. Foreman blows through Tubbs who does not have the footwork to avoid George's swings. And I sure do not see Tony tubs handling the 2 fisted body punching Foreman throws. Frazier out does Thomas in a close fight. Pinky had whiskers but it's another case of a guy absorbing to the body.
Why? I have an opinion which I backed up with a logical argument. Feel free to refute my argument with your own logic.
In '85, Tony Tubbs weighed 229 lbs and was 27 years old. He looked really good that year easily outpointing Bonecrusher Smith and Greg Page He boxed circles around Bonecrusher. Of course Foreman was better than Bonecrusher but he was very ponderous. Tubbs could move and box quite effectively in '85. And he would be facing a Foreman who was scarred by the Ali fight. This is not 1973 confident killing machine Foreman. Look what Jimmy Young did to Foreman in '77 and Young didn't move nearly as well as Tubbs.
But Foreman will shove him around. And then Tony is there for the uppercuts. That's the shot he needs to avoid getting clipped with and Foreman threw them with both hands. Once hurt, where and what does tnt Tubbs do to escape the guy? And Foreman throws viscious body punches. He was no headhunter in there & that's what Tony tubs wants anyway--a headhunter. You think for a nanosecond Tubbs absorbs that bodywork attack and shows zero effect? Tony needs a lot more punching power to keep a guy like foreman honest. and footwork---not staying in the pocket with this guy.
Did Jimmy Young have much punching power? Did Jimmy Young have great lateral movement? I will agree that Young had a better chin than Tubbs. But Tubbs moved better. Yes, Tubbs can't employ the strategy he used against Tyson where he tried to fight on the inside. But, that was 1988 238.5 Tubbs We're talking about 1985 229 lb. Tubbs.
No difference. Just as the lower pounds would have minimal difference in the outcome of the Tyson fight even if he's in shape---he still does not beat Mike. Foreman has zero problems cutting off the ring on the guy & Tubbs will not like the pace he has to take just trying to stay away from George. Young had snap on that right hand. It was sneaky and when it landed it caused Foreman & Ali t begin falling for feints. Tubbs doesn't have snap enough to discourage Foreman. Tubbs peak he wins 2 decisions. Relatively close fights & certainly no whitewashes. Foreman > Ali fought Lyle and Frazier back to back in non-title bouts. Then a soft touch like Agusto. And Agusto was the type guy Tubbs fought all the time prior to his peak. Dennis was an undefeated big heavy with promise and George fights the up and coming undefeated heavy. Then Ledoux. Then Young. That was a much harder field to negotiate than Tubbs faced.
