For what it’s worth, I don’t really think Golovkin beat either of them but I think he would’ve clearly if he were two or three years younger.

Sumbu winning the poll by the length of the straight, i thought it'd be closer. Good to see some respect for the wily Kalambay.

Nunn, a Southpaw and good fighter himself, blasted out Kalambay in one round. That type of blowout can happen to any orthodox fighter vs a southpaw.

Golovkin like many ko artist's they always had trouble with smooth boxers.
Style all wrong for Golovkin. A MW version of Foreman vs Young.
    Kalambay on pts.

As evidenced by the fact that he's beaten all the smooth boxers he's faced ... ? And yeah, I include Canelo in that list.

I love the way Kalambay has failed almost every time at the highest level (Nunn, McCallum, Kalule) and more than a few times at a lower level (Pyatt, Thomas, Buzzetti) but now he comes out and befuddles an unbeaten ring-cutting shark like Golovkin

Next thread: In what round does Herol Graham knock Golovkin out in?

    Oy vey.

You make it sound like those picking Kalambay have made some sort of stupid ludicrous choice. Taking Kalambay over GGG is hardly a ridiculous opinion as evidenced by some quality posters going that route and the overall vote favoring Sumbu.

Just goes to show that people here may not know as much as they think they do.

Kalambay isn't getting sparked in the first , that was a one in a million shot by Nunn. But that doesn't mean he couldn't be stopped later on .But kalambay s skills come in to play ,and he's not taking Golovkin lightly .
So with that , I see a points win for GG.I see kalambay putting on a great show of boxing but judges favouring the aggression of Golv more ..so a slightly controversial decision with most thinking kalambay should have got it .

If Canelo and Jacobs kept Golovkin away with their footwork, Kalambay outboxes him.

But they really didn't. Both men got jabbed to death, and Jacobs was dropped.

Also, Jacobs and Canelo were both likely over 180. They would have been cruisers or light heavies in the 80s.

GGG is my favorite fighter but he found himself in two close fights, If they made the 160 limit for the fight, it doesn't matter if they were 200 pounds on fight night, blame the game, not the player, people want to make excuses about the performances but I don't, Golovkin won both IMO but those were close fights against fighters that don't have the movement, the skills, the defense or the footwork of Kalambay.
