Concur. Pre-gutshot, only Satterfield & Liston (2) k.o.'ed him. Both guys "dangerous" for anybody.

Not really. If you saw Billy Daniels make Prime Williams do the chicken dance you wouldn’t say that. Williams was on camp street a few times. In a career of few live fights He was decked many times.

Sylvester Jones decked Williams twice. Satterfeild has him down three times. Liston and Ali had him up and down like a yo-yo (about 10 times between them). Al Lewis, Bob mashburn, Al Jones, Mac Foster and Mel turnbow all knocked the big cat down at least once each. One of the most famous photos of Williams is where he is immortalised spread eagled on the canvas. So I don’t know where Williams having a great chin comes from.

I’m not sure Williams had as good a chin as Floyd. Williams chin was definitely not good.

In other words, the only man who stopped or floored Williams when he was anywhere close to his prime was Liston. Therefore to support your point you're having to mention a fight when he was 20 years old and stepping in as a last-minute substitute, and a fight where he was 33 years old, on the comeback trail from a near-fatal gunshot wound, and up against a prime Muhammad Ali.

But in your mind, Pete Rademacher, despite the string of ko losses throughout his career, was a tougher opponent in his first professional fight than a prime Cleveland Williams.

    Fight #1
1963-03-09 : Cleveland Williams 212 lbs beat Billy Daniels 191 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Third ranked Cleveland Williams scored a bloody unanimous decision Saturday night over 6th ranked heavyweight Billy Daniels in their nationally televised 10 round bout. Daniels rocked Williams in the 1st round with a whistling right to the chin. But after that round the fight belonged to Williams, who stalked Daniels like a big cat throwing effective punches. Williams opened up a cut over Daniels' right eye in the 3rd round, another one over the left eye in the 8th round and bloodied Daniels' nose in the 9th. Daniels was in trouble several times, and he slipped twice but he was never knocked down. In the explosive 9th round, Williams staggered Daniels three different times with powerful jaw-crushing left hooks. But each time the game and crafty Daniels managed to clinch until the cobwebs cleared from his head." -United Press International

    Fight 2: 9/1964;
Following his loss to Ali, Daniels went on to score an upset decision over highly rated Doug Jones to earn a birth in a heavyweight title elimination tournament. In the opening round, Daniels was decked and lost a one-sided decision to Cleveland Williams. After the loss to Williams, Daniels' once promising career took a nosedive.

Williams won that Daniels fight didn't he? If he was hurt as bad as you say it sure sounds like the guy had excellent powers of recuperation. Good heart too.

Satterfield? Williams was a super late sub against a massive puncher, it happens.

Lewis, Mashburn, Jones, Foster, Ali and Turnbow are all after Williams was shot in the hip and lived the rest of his life with a bullet lodged inside him. For all intents and purposes his good days ended the second that bullet hit him.

The guy was shot as a fighter for Foster, Jones, Lewis, Mashburn and you could say Ali. The guy was 36+ for most of those fights yet here you are holding them up as some sort of empirical proof Williams had a glass jaw.

Ezzard Charles was down 3 times vs George Logan. He was down twice against Donnie Fleeman. He was down against Paul Andrews and down 3 more times against John Holman. That's 9 knock downs vs nobodies.

Did Ezzard Charles have a glass jaw chok?

Per the underlined it gets pretty tiring watching you make up dishonest claims again and again.

Nobody claimed Williams had a GREAT CHIN!!!! Someone says it wasn't glass and you somehow take that to mean it was claimed he had a great one.

You did the same thing with Bruno yesterday. A few people gave him a chance or picked him over Patterson and you claim we are saying he's an ATG. More dishonest claims. You did a similar thing with Foreman the other day.

And no, i do not believe Williams had a "glass jaw".

I bet you've got that photo on your bedroom wall ;)

Thanks for posting this!! Sounds like a fantastic win over a good contender for Williams. Sounds like he put on one hell of a show by that. It also shows he can come back to win after being hurt. Good fighter that Williams.

I cant find any mention of Satterfield flooring Williams 3 times.Liston and Ali had Williams down a total of 7 times in 3 fights.Williams was 39 years old when he fought Mashburn and 37 when he faced Lewis.
No one said he had a "great chin", just not a glass one.
I think you're getting a bit carried away here!

I don’t actually like the label “glass jaw” but it gets thrown at Patterson a lot of times. And patterson fought way more live fights and actual rated guys proportionally than big cat Williams ever did.

If Patterson has a glass jaw so does Williams. If you like the term (I don’t) then it applies to the big cat too.

yes you can’t knock Williams bravery. He just kept on getting up.

But Billy the barber Daniels was a part time fighter. He did have some good wins and was going through a good spell when he met Williams. He was not that known for his punching prowess.

This is a good point Williams best days were behind him for sure but how many live guys did he fight at his best? Satterfeild and Liston. Anyone else? Sylvester Jones knocked him down twice.

Charles took terrible beatings against Marciano and was matched really tough against young dogs wanting to make a name for them selves after that. Holman twice, Jackson Twice, Toxie Hall Twice, Bob Albright twice, Richardson, Wayne Bethea and young Jack Johnson. Those guys were not nobodies. Most of those guys outweighed Charles and he was fighting each month sometimes 3 times a month and sometimes twice a month. At least Williams was the bigger guy when he was past it.

if someone says Floyd has a glass chin or implied Patterson is easy to knockover then It is fair and correct to enlighten folks about how that compares to Williams. That guy was knocked down a LOT too.

Which is exactly what I am saying. I just said I don’t like the term. Nobody has a glass jaw. If people think Floyd was easy to knock over then so is Williams. Because he was. Sylvester Jones, Satterfeild, Liston proved it before the shooting. Nothing crazy about that son.
