Does anyone else think that Tunney and Dempsey displayed one of the best combo punching performances of all time? Tunney with the outside conbos of 1-2’s with hooks. And Dempsey with the powerful inside combos. They were both throwing them beautifully with speed and awesome form. Even including the knockdown from Dempsey featuring a lightning quick flush connected four punch combo. I think the jarring and stuttery film quality doesn’t do the fight justice. But you can sort of see through the antiquity of the machine filming the event, and see an awesome performance of combo punching by both men.
I will watch again with this thought in mind. But my instincts tell me that there are dozens and dozens of fights at lower weights which are better examples. But then again, this is a heavyweight only forum so maybe you are correct.
I agree with this. There will be loads and loads. I understand the point being made in the OP, but my answer would be no.
Watching the fight again, I think I would disagree with my original post. Tunney put on one of the best displays of combination punching I've ever seen (let alone footwork). But Dempsey was too inactive in this department, especially in the first half of this fight, to be considered one of the best combo punching fights ever. When Dempsey turned up the attack, which wasn't often, it looks like it could've been the case. The fight was most exciting when he was throwing bombs back, and not just getting chipped to a pulp while trying to get inside with the jab. Makes me wish the video quality for Tunney Dempsey 1 was as good.
