who are the most entertaining characters in boxing? gone are the days when Tony Galento would have a few pints and several hot dogs before a fight. Another thread reminded me of Maidana when he was called out by Khan for a rematch and his response was along the lines of 'why? i've made millions from Mayweather, I don't have to fight again, i'm gonna get fat, drink beer and go fishing'. Hatton was always entertaining with his fat suits and drinking in between fights. Maybe Juan Manuel Marquez for drinking his own urine (maybe not), Tyson Fury becoming Batman and Ricardo Mayorga smoking any entertaining stories about boxers?
I'm a little confused by the opening. Are you asking for present/recent examples of guys like Tony or any examples including guy from or before the 40s?
one of the greatest caracters in boxing history has to be 'Tex' Cobb. That man was as hilarious as he was tough!
TYson Fury with his mental routine just got into Wlads head, like him or not he is a character who speaks his mind as appose to the false nicely, nicely scripted AJ. I’d add BJS as well,he does come out with some awful stuff but I honeythink he’s doing it to sell the fight as he’s so respectful after he wins to his opponents.
Ok then I'll just ramble off some of my favorites regardless of time. I'm assuming everyone is avoiding obvious pick like King/Arum or Mayweather, Mike Tyson, Toney, and Ali etc. so I'll do the same and try to only mention lesser known or maybe forgotten. I always loved the Wlad believes he was poisoned story. When George Godfrey won his first prize he blew the whole thing on ivory dice. Those toothless crackheads called Spinks. John Ruiz's corner. Daniel The Jew Mendoza's usage of anti-semitism. Jack Johnson's mocking white fighters. Larry Merchant's interviews. Naseem was pretty great along with Uzzy. A lot of people don't like this about him but Margarito's cheating was always funny to me. B-Hop for the same reason as Marg plus his boxing buddha schtick he does. When Haye did the t-shirt with Wlad's dead, priceless. Chisora's ain't toe stopping us now. I can't find his name quickly, but I seem to remember catching a video of a guy named Southerland or some such who had a mullet and was a ninja. Yankee Sullivan satisfying a fix held at gunpoint against Old Smoke Morrissey by beating the **** out of Smoke and leaving him KO'd but exiting the ring before the ref could count Morrissey out DQ'ing himself technically losing the fight to satisfy the bets while winning the fight in all eyes that reported on the matter. Ballsy and hilarious. Orlando Cruz's expecting the world to give a **** that he's gay. Pretty much everyone pre Cribb who believed that beer and red meat was how you got into fighting shape and that training degrades the fighting spirit. I'm sure I'll think of more after a while but I'm starting to struggle for now so I'll leave it.
