How badly are some ATGS legacies hit if there was only one belt per weight?

I don't think it's ever about titles when ranking.

It's about who they beat and how they beat them.

I agree with that, who they beat, how they beat, and when they beat them!
I think the thread is about kudos given to multiple titlist and them beating other "titlists" who are over rated because they're titlist. I think we're really on the same wavelength.

Correct ,he would have had to face Lewis or perhaps V Klitschko for a shot at the heavyweight belt .No cherry picking and facing Ruiz .

That's right ,whilst not trying to take anything away from guys like hearns or Roy Jones , the fact is having multiple belts to go for does boost their records .Take that away and makes it a lot harder on some .

I know that it is not the same case but...
Larry holmes "was the champ" longer because he decided to defend only the ibf belt after his fight with marvis frazier against james smith in 1984.he avoided the hardest competition in pinklon thomas, tonny tubbs,no rematch with spoon etc...spoon and page fought for the vacant wbc belt in march of 1984

So he did .In a ideal world with only one belt , he s not giving up the WBC and defending against Thomas, Tubbs etc.
So maybe there's Holmes reign cut short ?

To me holmes was the real champ until 1984.

True , he may have well beat Thomas and tubbs ,but in a one belt world he may have had to defend against those guys .

I suspect that the belt would change of hands without a dominant champ between the young guys like tubbs, thomas, spoon, page etc but one thing is sure. Since 1984 onwards larry holmes was not the man in the hw division anymore

I'm not disagreeing with that .He should have given spoon a rematch to .
Maybe even Carl the Truth as well
Another point is , if only one belt , then guys like Thomas , spoon , tubb s etc would have all had to perhaps fight each other more for a crack at the belt .
