i remember at the time thinking how annoying lacy's girlfriend/fiance/wife was shouting 'fight jeff fight!' from ringside. you could hear her over the announcers. but jesus, looking back on it imagine being in her shoes. at ringside watching the man you love who 99% of people thought would just walk through this pale, skinny welsh dude. taking one of the most horrendous beatdowns ever given in the sport.
Nathan Cleverys father who had zero experience in being a boxing trainer. He sold flowers in his shop and suddenly decided to become Nathans trainer. His advise was so horrible and useless against Kovalev, it made me cry.
The actor Robert Conrad loved boxing and always had boxing-themed episodes in his shows and always employed boxers in any of those shows. He was always a fixture around the arenas on fight night on the west coast. But he decided to go further than that and bought the contract for featherweight Frankie Crawford. When Frankie took on the world class Dwight Hawkins, Conrad was exposed. Even the writers mentioned it in articles the next morning. Frankie was taking a thumping and they all stated how bizarre the corner work was. They said something to the effect of Conrad went round after round of no advice and simply rinsing Frankie's mouthpiece out while he was getting hammered. The split between them wasn't very pleasant either. Frankie accused Conrad of owing him money and even hired a leg-breaker to try and secure the funds. Crazy.
Personally I liked Fritz Sdunek in the Klitschko corner in the Sanders fight just about tripping over his own feet and dropping his equipment everywhere. Gives a fighter a real boost of confidence to see that your cornerman has the bug-eyed look.
Darky Smith in his sons (Stephen Smith) fight with Ricky Hatton 2002 He went into the ring and pushed Micky Vann (the ref)
How so??? Ali was a human punching bag laying on the ropes and ****ing Dundee let it go on 4ever. Are you serious? One of the worst displays of a corner watching there man almost get beat half to death.
Genuine question as I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it. I only asked because Dundee has never struck me as a guy who would deliberately let his fighters take too much punishment but I guess with Ali it was possibly more complicated in that he had reservations about Ali fighting Foreman but Ali convinced him that he would not only fight, but win. And then he did. Add to that all the hangers on around Ali and getting any sense into Ali or trying to stop it must have been a nightmare.
Ali was the walking dead after a few rds. By the 2nd he did nothing. Took an inhuman amount of punishment to the point of Holmes holding back. Unforgivable on Dundees part and the rest of the corner especially Bundini who wanted it to continue. Whole lot of them should have been suspended including the ref (Green) who was to in awe of it being Ali to stop it much much earlier. Dundee did finally stop it but the permanent damage was done by then.
Currys corner in the Nunn fight .His trainer shouting LET THE RIGHT HAND GO ! over and over again !He didn't!
Haglers corner in the Leonard fight. Marvin sleepwalked for 5 rounds, Cooney's corner vs Holmes wasn't great either
