Jimmy Ellis gets the exact same team behind him as Michael Spinks...

And bulks up for a championship run using weight lifting and other modern high tech resources exactly like Michael Spinks did with all the specialists that he employed to help him put on that additional heavyweight bulk necessary to compete in the heavyweight division.

Is Ellis any more successful? Does anything change? Were those professionals truly necessary to Michael Spinks for him to accomplish what he did at heavyweight, or will we never really know?

A quick thought.... Did Ellis ever fight a heavyweight as large as Spinks did when he took on Cooney?

Good point but that's the white Jimmy Ellis. We all, of course, know that I'm talking about the real deal...

He may have done a little better .maybe lasted a few more round against Frazier in their first fight .perhaps done better against Patterson ,a more convincing win?

No, I don't think he ever met anyone as big as Cooney...but I think that at his peak, he would have beaten Cooney...especially using that sneaky, fast, hard right of his.

Not quite as good at the art of trolling as Ears manages at times though...

I also think that Jimmy Young, a few years earlier, would have beaten Cooney as well. (off topic)

If you have the skill and punch placement to hurtcement headed fighters like Oscar Bonavena I have no doubt he could seriously hurt the much more fragile Gerry Cooney.
