'Jersey' Joe Walcott... y'know, from Philly. Reminds me of that bit in Naked Gun where they run through all the regionally specific boxers nicknames:

That pre-FOTC Frazier was a true beast, and knew he was going to win the FOTC bout.

My great-great grandfather was an early Philadelphia lightweight boxer who actually fought Philadelphia Jack O’Brien 3 separate times in 1897. Learning about him was what originally got me into boxing. His name was Martin Judge; he was just an average fighter to be honest but definitely had an interesting career.

Yeah, my grandmother actually has a bunch of newspaper clippings about one of his fights with Gans. Next time I’m up at her house, I’ll take some pictures of the newspaper articles and try to post them here. They are pretty interesting to read.

He was a pretty good fighter in his prime and always fought very good competition. When he got older, he had several injuries he was dealing with but he needed the money and couldn’t really afford to take the time off he needed to heal. So you can see from his record on boxrec that his performance dropped off quite a bit in the early 1900s. He later taught at a boxing gym in Philadelphia and was a bartender at a saloon for almost 40 years. According to my grandmother, several of the old time Philly boxers would stop by the saloon frequently to have a few drinks and talk about the glory days of years past!
