What a weird shaped guy he has shoulders like Razor Ruddock, lengthy arms like Jimmy Bivins ,and legs that look like they belong to a middleweight! Langford had beaten Johnson 2 years earlier and Johnson was on a losing streak but Sam's eyes had deteriorated badly in those two years. Langford and Johnson fought for Sam's Mexican Heavyweight title. Johnson won almost all the first 12 rds,by constant use of his left hand.At the beginning of the 13th Langford couldn't see out of his one good eye and halfway through the round walked to his corner and motioned the referee over to tell him he could not continue. Clay Moyle's excellent biography ,"Sam Langford Boxing's Greatest Uncrowned Champion," is a must for those wishing to bring themselves up to speed on Sam. Langford retired against Fred Fulton when a blow to the temple damaged the optic nerve inhis left eye and he lost sight in it,he had already had his right eye closed by Fulton's albatross like left jab. "Yes boys I quit to Fulton, but I didn't quit until I couldn't see out of either eye,and I couldn't even feel him any more.Thats why I quit.I never did think too much about fellows that went around and made excuses for themselves. So after the fight,I didn't tell anyone why I quit." Langford regained the sight in his right eye aftera few days but his left eye was blind from then on.
