This came up in a recent thread and my first instinct is to say no, Cotto was better under 154 than Golovkin was at any time in his weight, when I look at what they're doing with the competition they're doing it against. When I think of Cotto VS Mayweather and Alvarez, Mayweather against Alvarez and Alvarez against Golovkin it's hard for me to get there with those who'd say Golovkin is better. He has better punch resistance, but as a total package, no, he's not better. Not as many skills or as versatile, not as much speed, and Cotto was tremendously destructive at 140 and was breaking down guys as good as anyone Golovkin broke down and impressively.

GGG began his career at his natural weight.
He's not this thick boned monster his haters try to pretend his is.
He's never swerved a fighter and didn't need to be matched with styles that his would easily overcome.
He's comfortably beaten every style there is, against the best fighters in or around his natural weight WILLING to risk their @sses.

I'm a huge fan of Miquel, but I can't remember a single fighter who ran from him for a tune-up, much less yrs and even out of their own weight class.

Name a fighter who moved up or boiled down simply to swerve Cotto

    This.

Golovkin has looked unbeatable for nearly his entire career.

Since when did anybody look at Cotto and say "My God, how can anybody beat this guy?"

Cotto is an excellent fighter, no doubt, but the truth is he's been beatable by the very best his whole career, and thats not really something you can say about Golovkin. Only now that he's at an age where most fighters are retired or winding down, are cracks starting to show.

Cotto. They are equal in most area's but Cotto had better defense and could box going forward and backwards so because of that extra dimension he's the better boxer in a p4p sense.

in fact, has Cotto has ever been the best fighter in any weight class in which he's competed?

i believe not, but someone who's followed his entire career would no doubt be able to give a more authoritative answer

if the answer is no, then that would seem to end the matter right there: GGG has been the undisputed best MW for years, and even before that, the best in the division wanted nothing to do with him (eg, Sergio Martinez, Felix Sturm)

in my view, multiple-weight class champion are often given too much reverence (eg, Adrian Broner is a four-weight class world champ). The fact is that there are four recognized straps at each weight division (IBF, WBO, WBA, WBC) and at any given time, in just about every division, there is wide variance in the quality of the four belt holders; what's more, in about half of the weight divisions one or more of the straps is vacant.

Its a skill he doesn't have and Cotto does have which is why Cotto is more of a complete fighter.

GGG fought in a much weaker era than Cotto and if its a career comparison over a skills comparison then Judah and Mosley are better wins than Jacobs and Leniuex.

The question is who was the better fighter in a p4p sense meaning who was more compete and well rounded.

What can GGG do that Cotto can't? I stated already how Cotto had extra dimensions in movement and defense.
Outside that they both are good at throwing to the body , have great jabs and left hooks. In what area's does GGG pull away with it?

cotto has achieved a fair bit more, being multiweight champ for more than one belt and body, though not unified, but at MW i think 3G would be a bit too much for him.

To complicate the issue, Cotto does have better wins though, which indicates a higher ability H2H P4P.
