The right hand from Rocky that put Walcott down and out ?
Or the Left hook from Frazier that sent Ali flying in the FOTC ?
Probably 2 of the most famous punches in heavyweight history , but which does it for you ?

Rocky because it was the punch that won him the title and Frazier
left hook was more like a exclamation mark on a brilliant performance.

    This.

Having said that, the first time I saw both punches, I thought "rather him than me!".

Marciano. Frazier 's hook sealed the deal but in truth he didn't need it.

Frazier's hook knocked down an iron-jawed 29 year old champion (arguably the greatest heavyweight champ) still close to his prime who was trying to create distance from Frazier's range... and it happened in the greatest fight in the division's history.

Marciano's right took out a tiring 38 year old champ (arguably one of other worst of the champs) whose legs were betraying him late in the fight and who bounced into the punch while trying to land his own shot.

    I dunno, maybe Frazier?

    No.

For all that, you can't simply dismiss the result!

The right was a crude but good punch, hitting Walcott while throwing a inept punch at the woring moment.
The left hook was a peach right on the bottom in a dynamic manner.

    ---> Frazier.

Both amazing punches and sumptuous to look at and perfect examples of such different shots.

A J Liebling said it so well about Marciano's finisher, writing; 'Walcott flowed down like flour out of a chute'. The punch, from Rocky's perfect execution through to Walcott's beautifully smooth recline, was like watching a ballet, albeit quite a rough one. If only Rocky hadn't 'trun' that superfluous ugly left hook... Still, that was Rocky. He couldn't leave us with the abiding memory of him doing something perfectly.

That said, for straight rights, I still prefer Hearns vs Duran (albeit non HW) as the most aesthetically pleasing. Wonder if I'd feel the same if I'd only seen it in B/W.

For leaping left hooks I go with Patterson-Ingo 2. While not quite as good-looking a punch as Frazier's, the devastation it wrought on Johannson gives it a more final feel.

Well, in that case, I take Ruby Robert's smash to Corbett's slats.

I have always wondered whether the so called famous " solar plexus punch " Fitz landed was actually a Duran vs Buchanan type right handed drill to the private parts, Seamus.

Its not like many other champions in history let alone heavyweights have been dropped by one shot up the guts :D

Fighters like Frazier n Tyson have dropped guys with liver or kidney shots but not with a belly shot as far as I know.

    Cheers Mate.

As far as the question goes both knock outs featured a tremendous punch thrown by a guy who had absorbed a terrific beating but history has shown that Ali was a lot harder to drop let alone kayo than Walcott ever was so I will go with Frazier.

They were both enormous efforts and worthy of their high place in history. Marciano's is certainly more famous.

Agree with most here, but I wouldn't say it's even arguable that Walcott was one of the worst...

It's hard to imagine anyone standing up to the Suzy Q. Even if Chuvalo or McCall ate it they might be out on their feet. I'm astonished every time I see it.

Didn’t Walcott stand up to one in the previous round? The one from the famous picture that a lot of casual fans confuse for the knockout punch?
