If these 2 legends had Come up along the same time .who gains superiority ? Let's say they meet 3 times ..who comes out on top .??
Its a tight one. i'm thinking Monzon over 15 but pick em over 12. Distance fight with the rangier Monzon edging slightly. If they came about the same time, I think it takes a trilogy to sort it out
And what a trilogy Birmingham it could turn out to be .I think I've got Carlos winning two but so so close .
I think that's how a few peoples opinion s would be tbh .,Carlos above Hagler but not by much .In a series Hagler grabs at least one IMO but monzon just shines that bit more .
Yep, took me a long time to swallow my pride and get rid of that one awkward equal ranking among all of my ATG lists! Monzon over Hagler. But forever only one place above!
I guess they would both duck McCallum to fight higher rated more feared fighters in the Junior Middle division and their own...
Well if anyone got their time machine in working order, put me down for front row seats for this trilogy.
I don't think there would be a trilogy. Just 2 very close decision wins for Monzon. He would have known how to frustrate, out general and complicate things sufficiently for Hagler to cop two very close decisions.
Hey Red! Tend to agree; Marvin a true ATG with many skills that no other fighter possessed which, obviously, would give Carlos trouble. Remember his comment about Emile: "he was the ONLY fighter I ever faced that made me do things I didn't want to do". Lastly, IMO, a major advantage for Carlos, in this one, is their physical stature; Hagler was shorter and would be tied up often when he went on the attack. Carlos was nobody's fool and would use that height and reach advantage to build a lead and not let it go. IMO neither is going to be stopped (a long shot bet MIGHT be Hagler being cut up, tho a dubious scenario). In closing, I'm more intrigued about a mythical Hagler-Valdes s c r a p. That would certainly be a 'ringside sitting gem'! Two compact boys with 'sandman' power in both hands. My $0.02
Monzon was ideally suited for the middleweight division IMO, as was Hagler for that matter...it would have been fascinating for the armchair strategist (I'm one of those) and probably not the rock em/sock em free for all battle that so many would have hoped that it would have been. I just believe that Hagler's Achilles Heel was being outgeneraled...and not always being sure of what strategy/tactics to use, as shown vs both Leonard and Duran. Sure Hag was past his best vs Leonard, and he showed a certain indecisiveness vs a smart Duran before he got the upper hand and managed to cop the decision. Neither Duran or Leonard were as great a middleweight as Monzon, however, and neither had the size, reach, and cold command that Carlos possessed...which he would have maximized to the max vs Hagler. Monzon would have fought IMO a clever, controlled fight vs Hagler, and would have never been in doubt as to his strategy and tactics that he would have used. Boxing Hagler much as he did Bennie Briscoe in their '72 title bout, on the back foot...using that long, hypnotic left jab, and the 1-2....he would switch when Marvin wouldn't expect it to offense...and then negating his opponent with a variety of smothering tactics. Hagler would have certainly had his moments, and would have won his share of rounds, but IMO, none of it would have ultimately been that effective in the big picture...the 15 round distance, which Monzon was a master of. Monzon would have commanded those last 3 rounds, again in my humble opinion, would never have become "slugger happy", and would have turned it into a protracted chess match. Monzon's greatest strengths were his maximizing those physical advantages of his, and most importantly of all, that damned boxing IQ...he was an infernally clever great champion. I agree with you 100% if not more that a Rodrigo Valdez bout would have been more exciting and equally intriguing. Please except my additional 0.02 contribution bro.
