In his first fight after losing to Helenius, Peter fought in Oklahoma City. His opponent was an ex hockey tough guy turned boxer and a hulking 300 pounds. Peter stopped him in the first. Impressive, but the promoter had also dropped the 300 pound guy in the gym with headgear and sparring gloves.
Chambers was a natural 190-200 pounder and he eat Peters power shots up like candy. Toney went 24 rounds against him laying up against the ropes. Peter wasn't even comparable in power to guys like Tua , Ike , Briggs , Morrison , Rahman ...
Ate em like candy? Yeah right. I haven't seen the fight since it aired, but Chambers' whole fight plan was based on using movement and his guard to avoid eating flush power punches. I think Peter's power is certainly comparable to the men you've listed, though I could see a couple of them edging him out.
Cuts both ways. Peter bombed out some average guys ... fair enough. Liston himself was bombed out by Martin who was nothing special in the grand scheme of things.
How old was Liston? Liston kod world champions and rated contenders! Who is the best name on Peter's ko list?
Probably Maskaev. Are you still labouring under the delusion that raw punching power makes a great champion?
I'm pretty sure Eddie Chambers came on this board and said Sam Peter was the hardest puncher he faced. There's more to knocking out a boxer than hitting hard, and Sonny Liston was unanimously better at all of those things. But as far as power, Peter was way up there, just too sloppy to land enough flush shots.
Who can say for sure? Ruddock v Patterson ..does razor get him out in one ? Liston v Tyson post Douglas ..would Liston have lost two fight s to Mike? It's a question for sure ..
