Sonny Liston & Sam Peter Who Was The Harder Puncher?

I didn't suggest that Peter did not hit harder than Berbick, I questioned the words ,"much harder". I think Liston was in a whole different league to Peter when it came to punch,that's just me.

 

That has to do with skills not power. Razor was incredibly talented but his boxing IQ and insistence on throwing just his pet punch held him back big time.

Ruddock could cold **** patterson with one punch even if he looks stupid missing patterson with the same punch over and over for 5 rounds til he finally catches him

 

Who did Shavers KO? Lyle? Cleveland Williams? Most of these guys didnt KO their best opponents. Because raw power doesnt necessarily mean KO. Power+technique+accuracy+timing/and or handspeed=KO

There are dozens of NFL players, who after 1 month of instruction and practice on punching technique could produce great punching power measured on a machine. That doesnt mean they could KO a top 10 HW

This is all very true.

So if we can't build the case for Peter as a puncher based on his record, it then turns on the testimony of his opponents and sparring partners.

Are they backing him up particularly?

 

Good thing we have video! The eyeball test is as good a measure of punching power as any.

 

I only care because it taps into several of my pet peeves about viewpoints I often see expressed on this forum.

I think their's doubts Sam Peter hit harder than Joe Frazier if we're being honest.

 

I know you have an agenda against old school fighters and have some weird feitsh for modern ones but it's really not up for debate. Liston hit MUCH harder. Liston and Foreman's common opponents all said Liston hit harder. Do you think Peter hits harder than Foreman?

 

I would say that it was one of the more subjective to be honest.

Either way, what particularly impresses you about Peter's power on film?

 

Toney fought Holyfield, Lucas Browne, oquendo, rahman 2x, peter 2x, Ruiz, I think it's fair enough praise besides James is a warrior who has sparred and fought 1000's of rounds I think his opinion should bear some merit even if the majority of his career was not at heavy.

 

Hang on, though. Are we talking about a textbook Left-Hook by Peter? Or, are we talking about one of his impressions of an Olympic Hammer-Thrower, during which his left glove scans at least 120 degrees of the stadium before landing?

 

Subjective, yet superior nonetheless.
