Golovkin up against Haglers title opposition?

He gets destroyed by everybody. Look at how bad he was against Ouma and Brook. These guys were tough against Hagler so Golovkin has no chance whatsoever. They hit harder back then and were much tougher because of the oxygen ratio in the air. Maybe GGG could manage a draw with Cave Man Lee?

Nope I think people will come on here and discredit Golovkin. Just getting in here first, to help out.

 

On his very best night, I see Golovkin beating them all. In fact, I'd pick prime Golovkin over most middles since Hagler, apart from Hopkins and Jones (and Marvin himself). But I've only just started watching and rewatching the 80s/early 90s middles with a passion, as I was too young first time round. Got to love YouTube... I used to buy the fights via mail order.
I think Leonard would give him his sternest test, from your list.

 

Good call. I agree that Leonard would probably be the toughest too. Very smart and fast boxer, he'd pretty much seen it all.

 

Everyone goes on about his power, but I think prime Golovkin's greatest asset was cutting the ring off. That's an attribute which seems to be diminishing (unless I'm completely wrong and, as many say, it's recent level of opposition). Can't think of many others at middle who might be better at refusing to allow the ring to be quartered than Leonard.

 

Doesn't matter how hard hitting those guys back then were. They ain't putting GGG on the canvas. GGG has one of the best chins of any boxer of all time, if not the best. GGG is also used to training in extreme conditions, he is from Kazakhstan, that's as close to as tough as it gets. He puts himself through hell to get ready for fight night. The current Golovkin (2016 onwards) might struggle a bit more against the very top from that era, but I have no doubt he would beat all of them.

The younger, prime, lighter golovkin doesn't just beat those guys, he absolutely decimates them. Behind the hard hitting, older golovkin is a very, very talented boxer. The lighter and more balanced Prime GGG never fought top opposition, but if he did, he would have battered them.

I feel that against a cuurent version of GGG, Leonard gives him the hardest fight. Leonard is the best mover of those elite middleweights you mentioned, and it's pretty obvious that a fast mover who can avoid being pressured onto the ropes has a great chance of winning. Again though, that's against the current golovkin. A younger, fresher, prime golovkin gives that entire list hell, including Leonard. I personally think Prime GGG, if we got to see him proper, would be top 3 no doubt on the all-time middleweight rankings.

Golovkin's distance control is absolutely superb, and he uses it not only to make the other guy miss and to keep the fight at the range he wants it to be in, but also to cut the ring and to give no rest to the opponent. I felt he cut the ring off on Jacobs just fine; it was Jacobs' blistering punching power that kept him from just barrelling in on him.

Canelo's newfound footwork was a revelation and Golovkin probably had the hardest time cutting him off of anybody since maybe Geale. Nevertheless, he DID cut him off and trapped him on the ropes many times. It was Canelo's toughness and slickness in the pocket that prevented him from getting stopped.

There's far too much agreement between us on this thread! It's unsettling me, lol. I agree with most of your post, but really can't come anywhere near your idea of GGG being a top three middle. I see him top three of the last thirty years (post Hagler). Yet I think I get why you say 'if we saw him proper.' I'm guessing you mean if we'd seen him tested in a better era? I would currently probably put him somewhere around number 25 all time. Before Hagler, middleweight beasts abounded.

 

he'd beat all the non elites, outpoint the fairly good narrowly (jacobs level, eg fulgencio, Sibson) and ko those outside the top ten.

Lucky Herol is a huge fan of Golovkin or he'd have had him losing to Hagler's manager as well.

 

so i am going on what 3G has done, kos lower to mid levels, outpoints good, draws with elite. Thats entirely accurate. SO you aren being accurate if you oppose it, no surprise there mind u.
