For the analytical amongst you - especially those who have seen a lot of Parker and Joshua. What are the weaknesses that most stand out in both fighters?
Parker: Footwork - off balance or open after throwing punches, can't cut off the ring, can't show angles on offense or defense, can't box going backwards, defense and ring generalship is basically bad on account of his shoddy footwork and balance. Punching - doesn't throw a straight right hand. All power punches end up as hooks. So is easy to defend against. His ratio for connecting punches is low. His hooks end up hitting arms and gloves. Predictable. Joshua: A bit stiff his high guard means he is probably not as fluid punching and moving as he could be. Shitty gas tank. Possible China chin.
I used to believe that this style was flawed but it's perfect for a jabber. I made so much fun of Brook and Joshua for this upright style but for his size it's perfect because not many HW fighters throw or can deal with jabs. Look how long Klitschko's ruled with the jab. All I know is that Parker is going to have to go full HW Maidana to win this fight. He is going to have to be more mentally strong than anything because he is expected to lose and the crowd will let him know right away. If he breaks just a little Joshua wins the fight on confidence alone.
Agreed completely. Look at Usyk, a guy who I think exemplifies this the best. He has a high guard and he relies heavily on jabs and straights despite having a varied arsenal. You can fire off jabs and straights from a high guard very quickly.
I absolutely think it works for him. Parker will have problems landing a single power punch upstairs.
Joshua is stiff, lacks stamina, chin suspect. Parker is kind of unknown, but if his chin is as good as I have heard about, that fight could go the distance.................don't think so, but there are a lot of unknowns in this fight..................
JOSHUA Stamina/Conditioning - he has a tendency to punch himself out and then is vulnerable and gives away rounds until he recovers. Movement - he can move reasonably well but has a bad habit of holding his feet and becomes too stationary and therefore to easy to get to. Parker will have some success if he can get off first, he won't find Joshua too difficult to hit as long as Joshua's offence doesn't force Parker into a overly defensive posture. Left hook - it's still a punch he's open too, still drops the right hand when throwing it, not as much as before but it's still an issue. Whyte and Wlad both hurt him with left hooks when he was coming in, so a left hook counter will always be a good punch to use vs Joshua. Giving up his size advantage - he has a tendency to stay in range and is willing to trade. That has worked to his benefit so far as he almost always has a size, strength and power advantage but at some point it could be a flaw to be exploited by the right opponent. PARKER Counter punching - he simply doesn't do it, he used to if you watch the Takam fight but for some reason this is a component of Parker's game that has vanished. Predictability - Parker's combinations are predictable, he telegraphs his attacks with his left jab, almost every attack starts with the jab, when have you ever seen him throw a lead right or left hook? Jab - it's weak, he flicks it out with little to no power, his predictability wouldn't be such an issue if his jab had more authority to set up his attacks. Instead it's a pointless punch that let's an opponent know when to cover up. Footwork - He has quick feet, but his foot work is sloppy, just watch his fight with Fury he fell repeatedly into the ropes, squared up, over balanced, ropes only thing keeping him up. He over extends himself all too often leaving him too far away to counter when he does evade an attack or over balanced when being aggressive. Doesn't move after throwing punches, too stationary. Defence - It's gotten better. He does catch and parry the odd shot, his head movement is better than it was. But he's still easy to get to, especially because he leaves himself open after throwing. When being defensive he puts himself in bad body positions which means one he can't counter and two he is vulnerable to follow up attacks from an opponent, forcing himself to continue to be defensive. Power/punching technique - His power hasn't gone up with him as he's gone up in level. He's fast, but he's basically an arm puncher. Look at how he punches, it's all shoulders and arms, he get's very little hip/waist rotation into his shots which means the kinetic chain is broken he doesn't deliver shots with the power he could. It could see him continually be forced onto the back foot by more powerful opponents like Joshua. Kevin Barry - Fact is he is out of his depth as a trainer at this level. Parker's progress under him has been limited which is shocking given Parker's clear natural ability. Parker has gotten as far as he has in spite of Barry not because of him. Against Joshua I think Barry's short comings as a trainer will be re-confirmed.
Yeah Im thinkin the same with Joe. You definitely have been watchin him closely. Interesting point you make about Joshuas right cross thats vulnerable to a left hook. Hopefully Joe can take advantage there.
Parker's main weakness is he couldn't punch himself out of a wet paper bag. Hughie Fury could have been boxing on roller skates, and he still would have finshed all 12 rounds on his feet. The bodybuilder Joshua's main weakness is probably all those growth hormones, he's used to pump up those artificial muscles. Turning him into a stiff ass mummy with no mobility, and athleticism to even catch his opponent. Anthony will be 260 in his next fight. And will have the same health problems as Holyfield did in the mid 90s the next couple of years. Both will be easy pickings for Deontay pretty soon.
