Let's say back in 2003 when both Jones and Sanders became heavyweight champions, decided to face off, who would have won?
Sanders gets Roy out of there early. If I'm not mistaken I believe that there was talk of a Jones-Sanders fight, Roy knew his limitations.
Sanders was hiding a hand injury when he negotiated the fight, the man spent all summer 03 out of the ring, and was just looking for a cash grab lol He probably would have ended up losing. The healed, somewhat prepared Sanders that challenged Vitali in 2004 beats Roy Jones.
Depends which corrie. roy jones handles an old fat retires sanders that easily destoryed wlad in seconds, UD points win. Its a joke to propose that Roy Jones could not beat failed contenders who were 38 year old retirees, when he was handled the best prime LHWs and a HW titleholder. However prime corrie is much tougher. The prime one that was ktfo by rahman and never made it into contention, that would be a fight where Corrie holds more cards. I expect noone at all would be asking this is retired sanders had simply stayed retired and not been dredged up magically for a fake title defence.
Sanders leapt at the chance of a fight with Jones. It would almost have been a gimme. It was RJJ's manager that signed for the Sanders fight and Jones soon put a stop to that sort of nonsense. I can see Jones winning over a light - hitting, slow and smaller heavyweight like oh, say Ruiz. Sanders was big, fast, accurate, power-punching and threw punches in bunches. I can't think of a worse matchup. Jones could almosrt certainly have survived to the end if he set his mind to it - Sanders' footwork was gone by then - but if he wanted to win he'd have to engage and he didn't have the tools to either take Sanders' punch nor hurt Sanders.
Not just talk. Jones' team had agreed: ""Taking the fight shows Roy Jones is definitely a heavyweight champion who takes on all-comers. It's a very exciting fight for not only the two fighters, but for the whole boxing world and everybody is already talking about it in America," said Muhammad. Also speaking from New York, Smith described the Jones fight as a "major coup". "Corrie is ecstatic, he's over the moon. What we've put together here is mind-boggling. Corrie's always said he wanted to fight Roy Jones and I believe Corrie will knock him out," said Smith." https://www.iol.co.za/capeargus/sport/miracle-deal-sets-up-bout-for-sanders-527861
Both guys wanted that fight for the WBO belt after Wlad cowardly ducked out of the rematch. The only reason it didn't happen is because the WBO wouldn't allow #1 rated Brewster be bypassed. Had the fight happened soon after Wlads destruction , Roy would have been koyed , but he'd have a chance against the untrained Sanders who fought Vitali.
If Tarver and Del Valle could land big lefts on Jones, and Corrie Sanders quickly knocked out most smaller fighters he fought, Corrie would be at least near pick-em.
Sanders by ko or tko He has great handspeed and power - two things Ruiz lacked. He's also got a huge height, overall size and strength advantage. Roy would move, but Sanders would catch up to him.
I'd pick Jones over more true cruisers than most would. I'd pick Jones over fewer true heavies than most would.
Also JOnes knew how to figth southpaws, which was Sanders biggest boon - when Corrie came across someone mechanical who wasnt equipped for southpaws (ie outside the A and B+), he profited.
