Jorge Linares is not an elite fighter or an A level fighter. He's not even Shawn Porter Level.

He's the new Juan Manuel Marquez of boxing. A boxing hipster wet dream. Except he has no chin. There is nothing there on that mandible, but a big pile of glass. It might be worse than Amir Khan's because it's actually that bad.

He's never even had a bout with an elite fighter. And why is he being knocked out by guys like Salgado, Demarco and Thompson?

Contrast that to a guy like Shawn Porter who's never been knocked out. Only has 2 losses which were close fights to p4p level fighters. But because he fights in a relatively hard-nosed crude style of boxing he's not given the respect of a Linares.

Boxing hipsters are a weird bunch.

Anybody with half a brain can see clear as day that Mikey Garcia blows that chin up. Hell, Miguel Berchelt likely sends his mandible into orbit.

Wait, dude - you say in one breath he "isn't even Shawn Porter level" but in the next that he's "the new JMM"?

You don't think Porter is greater than JMM was, do you?

Salgado was an undefeated fighter when he beat Linares, he managed to rack up several other fairly decent scalps on his resume along the way, Salgado is no scrub, his decline has only been fairly recent, quite a few matches after being stopped for the first time in his career by Uchiyama. No big deal there.

As far as the DeMarco and Thompson losses, the DeMarco match he won every round of that fight until he got cut, so what, it happens. The Thompson match was stopped because of a cut after a KD, far too early IMO, Linares came back too soon, but since then he's looked back in fine form. Guess what, fighters can go through rough patches because, you know, they're normal people, now he's back on track, get over it.

I didn't mean to imply that Porter is as good at boxing as JMM was. But Linares cultivates the same kind of boxing hipsterism and fandom as JMM did. They occupy the same space so to speak. They are highly skilled technicians that hardcore boxing hipsters, purists, fans, etc. (whatever term you want to use) glorify. The difference is that JMM possessed a chin and had a disputed rivalry with Manny Pacquiao. Linares is a poor man's JMM with no chin.

 Well, I'm probably the exact sort of hipster you're talking about that places a high premium on technicality and touted JMM highly before most others did (and louder than anybody else once they caught up to speed on him) and now believes Linares to be a sublimely well-oiled machine in terms of skill, if a fighter with some glaring and unshakable flaws that will always loom over him like a haunting specter. (kind of like Khan, were I to compare him with anyone - except much better than Khan)

linares is world class... you need your eyes checked if you think hes not that good.. even paquiao lost 2-3 fights to lower class fighters early in his career.

Would you say the same about Loma? No doubt Loma is a very skilled technician, that lost to a guy far less skilled and far more crude than those that defeated Linares. What say you?

Are you crazy? JMM was absolutely elite. He's probably the Top5 best counterpuncher the sport has ever seen.

Go away. I'm trying to enjoy this IPA that neither you nor Beer Advocate has heard of while I listen to some Bon Iver on vinyl.
