Lets say this is the Quarry of the late 60's, in his prime, but before the terrible Joe Frazier beating. Riddick Bowe of the Holyfield fight. How do three fights between these two, each scheduled for 15 rounds, go? How do they unfold? Does Bowe have any serious problems navigating the 15 round distance? Is Bowe simply too hittable for a strong counter puncher who won't play into Bowe's game?
You don't feel that, over the course of 45 rounds, the skilled, clever and hard hitting Quarry couldn't turn the tide for himself even once?
Quarry was an almost great among super greats. He eats up and spits out Bowe like Golota would do w/out the fouls. R. I. P. FIGHTER
No offence, Russ, but Pat M beat me to it. Was Jerry really that skilled or hard hitting, even? Brave and rugged but not the quickest and quite easy to hit. He is tailor-made for Bowe who would not need to worry about his own defence and chin as Quarry lacked the speed, power and agility to test it. No-one calls for a rematch after Bowe really dominates the first fight.
This is how I see it .Bows wins the first knocking down quarry a couple of times in the fight and winning a unanimous .But quarry put's on such a great losing effort that there's calls for a rematch. Bows takes him lightly and Quarry fights the fight of his life to get a split decision win. A deciding match see's both men hurt and down and bowe gets a slim decision win .
No offense taken, I don't come here to get offended, just to discuss boxing. Any and all opinions are welcome, and my viewpoint on this one isn't concrete to say the least, hence why I made the thread.
hell no!cant you tell he's physically overmatched? ESBers seem to think boxing's all mental and strategy
I do wonder if Bowe would lag in the final three rounds of a 15 round bout. Those are waters he never navigated, and you can't say the same about Quarry.
I don't think size would be the real deciding factor here. Quarry gave up almost 35 pounds to Buster Mathis and hardly dropped a round there, and 20 pounds to Ron Lyle when he was already years past his best. If you can take the best the likes of Mac Foster can dish out, and have a chin good enough to get in the trenches and counter punch with Earnie Shavers, I'm not quite so sure Riddick Bowe is going to be the one to bulldoze through Quarry. I personally think he would struggle far more than the likes of Joe Frazier did, it would come down to styles.
You should watch more film on Quarry if you think he lacked quickness and or power. I agree his defense wasn' the best but he was a threat offensively
That's what I see as well. Bowe not showing up in any kind of condition and just planning on a payday and easy night's work for the rematch. But Quarry does not cooperate and shows up with his A game & lands that short left hook of his all night. 3rd fight is Bowe by cuts. Finally shows some ringsmarts and throws a ton of right uppercuts. Busts him up. Obviously gets himself in better shape & Quarry is the guy not razor sharp.
Yup. It would be brutal. Quarry would take such a beating on the way in and then be greeted by a heavy uppercut a high workrate and 240lbs leaning on him. His face would fall apart, his vision gets impaired and he wont see the punches coming afzer 4-6 rounds. Quarry could maybe drop Bowe because Bowe was not that hard to stun or hurt, but he wouldnt finish him. If you're smaller, you need quickness to beat Bowe, especially footspeed to get in without getting damaged, land some shots and either put him down like dempsey and tyson would or get back out like ali or like holyfield against foreman
Exactly. Bowe might not KO him because quarry was tough, but he might get stopped on cuts or beaten badly until the final bell. Bowe beat the real deal holyfield in his PRIME and showed incredible skill, power, inside fighting, will to win, etc. And if we're being honest quarry was like a smaller, poor man's holyfield.
