Seems to me that I am the only bloke who thinks Groves isn't far larger than Young Christopher. I definitely believe there is a size difference but some of these discrepancies seem far fetched to me. I honestly don't believe there would be more than 1/2 a stone in it, Between Middleweight and Super Middleweight there is an 8lbs difference, I think Jr is larger for the 160lbs division then Groves is for the 168lbs division. A stone is practically 2 weight divisions separation. There is no way Groves is 2 divisions bigger, be realistic, look how big Jr looked in his fights @ 160, when he moved up he was bigger than King Arthur and didn't look too small next to Yildirim a former light heavyweight. Groves might spend 95% of his life weighing 200lbs but he isn't ripped at that weight by any means, he will be carrying a spare tyre around his gut and will spend early camp life dieting to lose the fat. Come fight night I believe he must be in the vicinity of 183-185lbs. Jr cuts weight to make 168, he looks like a raisin @ weigh ins dry as hell and then come fight night he has a strong hydrated physique. Jr is lean but he is a really dense build, he could go to 175 and still keep his speed IMO and not look like a bodybuilder. Id say Jr must cut at least 10lbs, heck Jamie Cox has stated he fights @ 175 and Jr is a lot bigger than him. Jr probably weighs 180lbs fight night IMO, or at the very minimum 178lbs
I think there will be around 12-13ib in difference on the night. I expect Eubanks to go into the ring around 12st 2ib and Groves around 13st.
That was before Xmas but I bet he was extremely dehydrated if that wasn't just a dodgy scale. Practically all middleweights fight @ 170 or 12st 2, that would basically mean he was never the bigger man in any of his fights. Find that hard to believe
I think there will be a noticeable size difference but I'm also not so sure the weight disparity will be so huge
I suppose we are on the same line of thinking. I did say that Jr is a lot bigger than Cox but then I went on to say he would weigh 3-5lbs more. I didn't really mean he's a lot bigger than Cox I just meant he's noticeably bigger than Cox. I would say Jr is between Cox and Groves in size. I don't think Groves will have the same advantage he had against Cox but I do think he will look bigger. 5lbs is still a decent size advantage but it's not to the point of it being an overriding factor.
Groves is naturally a much bigger man. That's the point. No need to obsess about how many pounds.....natural size, not exact weight....
Gatti used to put on about 19ib, Ricardo Alvarez 21ib, Matthysse 19ib, Chad Dawson 17ib, Canelo 18ib, Brandon Rios a massive 23ib... Just some examples of how much weight they stack on overnight. Let’s acknowledge this truthfully, Eubank is a big 160. When he steps up to 168, he’s a smaller supermiddle. Murray had the same problem, it looks the same for Cox who got thrown around easy. Brant was too small. Kell Brook was a big welterweight but will be a small light middleweight. Jeff Horn is another huge welterweight but would lose all his advantages at light middleweight. Most fighters boil down in weight, so naturally the fighters who step up in weight are always going to be up against it. They were big for their division but then they step up and realise that the lads they’re hitting are bigger and their own shots don’t hurt as much, whereas the shots they receive a much more heavier and hurtful. Does this mean Groves is guaranteed to win...no. It is an advantage though and something Junior must overcome.
That natural advantage is diminished by him having to cut to 168 though. I don't think he is anywhere near as naturally big as Callum Smith do you? Smith still makes 168 easier than Groves as well IMO lbs do matter otherwise we wouldn't have weight divisions
Good post 20. I reckon gg will be about 10lb heavier This is an art in itself and its a procedure that can go horribly wrong. My understanding is the correct way to do it is bring the weight down steady at no more than 2lb a wk for fat burning. 24 hrs before the weigh in empty the bladder system, which is done by not taking in fluids or very little fluids in that 24hrs. sitting in a steam room and pulling out up to a few lbs for the middleweights, is acceptable and the correct way to do it. What you get tho from some of the fighters is massive weight crashes often losing big amounts in a ahort period of time. Then they start dehydrating from 2wks out and sit in saunas for a full wk. I know a pro who was only allowed to drink 500ml of water a day by his trainer from 3wk away from 12rd fights. In this period he was still cutting weight, training hard and sparin 2 or 3 times a wk. I wouldnt let some of these so called trainers look after my dogs, i honestly wouldnt. This weight cutting to gain an adavantage has gotten way out of hand and a lot of the time its been overseen by trainers who simply dont know how to manage this area correctly
