Who was the greater overall? Jones or Mayweather?

Jones had some explosive wins & was talented in speed, power & ring craft, had he retired after Johnny Ruiz who knows how he would be rated. IMO like Chris Byrd moving down again in weight does not always means you will be fighting less of an opponent or challenge & its not always good for the body. Archie Moore was incredible at lane/division changing Lightheavy to Heavyweight but he was one of the few, Michael Spinks in recent times made the move up.

I think the Tarver loss & then Glen Johnson kind of hurt his legasy at least the chin part but Jones still had some spectacular wins. Floyd was consistant, less spectacular at times because Floyd wanted the win & was smart & cautious. Carlos Monzon was also a fighter who put out what was needed to win & only pushed when he had to. I think Floyd much like Monzon had a long career at winning & this is not an easy task both men very smart at that. I think Floyd closes a smidge on top

 

I absolutely believe Canelo was a more difficult win, particularly at age 36.

There’s nothing speculative about Hopkins’ experience level at the time of the fight. He was objectively inexperienced.

Castillo and Corrales did the plenty after Floyd. Canelo is lineal at 160 post Floyd. Márquez sparked the pfp number 1 post Floyd. What are you saying?

Really? And how do you "objectively" gauge that? Do you measure Hopkins' inexperience against Roy's vast experience?

Not really. Once Mayweather had left the 135lbs division, they more or less passed lightweight belts between themselves and Casamayor. A great fight occurred between them both but, not a lot of success came after that.

Don't you mean "lineal" at 155, which Canelo then gave up because he wasn't ready to fight the unified Champion at 160?

Seriously? When you start relying on the mythical, Pound-for-Pound rankings to bolster a position of achievement and quality level, you're flailing - trust me.

The fact that a 39-year-old was even in those subjectively fantastic rankings and beat a clearly, well past his best and so-called Pound-for-Pound number 1, says more about the need to be skeptical about those rankings than it does about the quality of Mayweather's competition.

I'm fairly certain Marquez never went on to reinvent himself at anything above 135. Granted, he had that one good night (finally) against Pacquaio, after three previous attempts; the penultimate clash having been an utter stinker. But, he was never a legit Welterweight.

I shouldn't be surprised at your fierce defense of Mayweather. I know you're a massive fan and happen to think his best win was against Marquez. That's all I needed to remember, really.

Good analysis - agree with all that. Prime for prime, Jones was the greater fighter.

 

Looking at their records it's no contest but peak for peak Jones was something else.

Mayweather doesn't have better wins than Hopkins and Toney. I voted Jones Jr.
