or... an old dog tries to learn new tricks... the first of Steele's knockdowns of Lesnevich when they met in 1936. A thing of beauty. http://gph.is/2EiePH8
Reminds me a bit of Tyson. I'm sure i've seen him throwing leaping left hooks too, decades before the likes of Roy Jones.
What impresses me is the dynamic range of his shoulder snap punching. He was able to get proper leverage and mechanics after missing and being out of position. Shows he can throw bombs at various ranges. Dynamic power.
What's killer is him throwing that looping left from a southpaw stance and just how comfortable and nonchalant he is. His footwork was always great; his fists and feet seemed to work independently. And it's like he just has a cudgel at the end of his arm. I am a southpaw and about my only "trick" ever was a shift and throwing a looping right with tons of shoulder snap (more than my left for sure) from an orthodox stance. It might have been the hardest punch I threw.
Here's essentially the coup de grace... It sucks because there is an edit here. He slams him with a left hook, spins, feints the left and crushes him with a right. http://gph.is/2EiNRDw
Steele's one of my favorite boxer punchers. I'm glad he gets credit from hardcore fans now after flying under the radar for too long. He's a fighter that "pops" on film as a special talent. Still holding out hope that there's footage of Steele-Overlin out there....
Freddie Steele 123-5-11, with 3 losses coming late in Steele's career. The Mid-30's (& mid-40's) MW & small Lightheavies fighters, always in great shape bad-basses, and would take on anybody. Would have no problem taking on the so-called all-time great MW's ranked by "today's so-called experts".....I wouldn't be surprised at seeing a lot of upsets going the old-timers way.
Throws the left hook like Tyson and Jones with Tyson's bad intentions.....jabs and rights over the top, killer instinct, sense of distance and cool assassins control like Monzon one of the middleweight fighters who impresses me most and is in my top 5 if not top 3 and only 5 losses in over 100 fights 3 at the end he had beautiful ring generalship.
Never knew much about him until recently. He looks great on film and I wish he was around today. A guy like him would shake up the MW division.
Really spectacular, wasn't he? He's one of the most exciting fighters I've ever seen...and most lethal.
He ended up basically southpaw after throwing so he simply throws a powerhouse left hook. I've definitely seen Tyson do the exact same thing to great affect as well.
