1980 Larry Holmes vs 1974 George Foreman

As Ali said about Foreman, post-fight: "Foreman is a master at cutting off the ring".
So Holmes would have to stand and take the heavy chite Foreman put on Ali (and only
Ali really had the capability to do it with prime Foreman.)

Foreman by TKO in 6 rounds, though Holmes is very competitive (Remember Holmes was roughed up bad
by Duane Bobick in the amateurs)

 

Holmes would survive Foremen for the first rounds. After that, its getting worse and worse for Big George....

 

Well all you know that i am the biggest foreman fan and i don't like the clown larry Holmes ,so the easy answer for me would be saying "foreman by easy ko".but no. I am honest
I think that it is a close fight and you can make a solid argument for both fighters.

 

Foreman by 5 or 6 or Holmes later for me. I'd say Holmes would start the favorite.

 

Holmes would act like Foreman had a disease for 5 round s , moving away and jabbing constantly. Foreman would stalk , trying to pin him down but Holmes jab disrupts him .
By seven George is getting hit more frequently and his right eyes swollen shut .Larry let's his guard down for a min in this round when BOOM ..a Foreman right drop's him like bricks.
Larry gets up on Bambi legs and George chases him .But the bell rings .

Foreman comes out next round all guns blazing but Larry has recovered and bangs In his jab rat a tat tat .
By the ninth Foreman s guard is so low that Holmes is scoring cleanly.
Mid round , Larry let's go a vicious combination and big George goes flying in to the ropes and down .He staggers up at 8 but the ref doesn't get a clear response from him and Waves it off .Foreman later claims he drank some funny juice before the fight that sapped his strength.
Larry replied that it didn't affect Foreman s punch in the 7 th round !

Holmes has a great chin and a stylistic advantage over the physically superior foreman, I'm more a fan of foreman but I'd say Holmes is the slight favorite here.

 

Holmes did not have The chin of Ali neither his hand speed,stamina or tough mind.he had good capacity to recover but he could be knocked out, he was hurt by much lesser fighters than foreman and shavers never saw the day where he was the finisher that foreman was,a younger holmes was not stopped because he fought crapy finishers... The only finisher in the level of foreman that he fought was tyson and knocked him out,the people of course will mention his age but i think that it was more a thing of styles tyson always stops holmes. Holmes was not like jimmy young nor Ali, he was good but he did not have the perfect style with the necesary dinamic enough footwork to outpoint george because foreman did cut the ring pretty well he would put larry against the ropes at some point for sure .gerry cooney lasted 13 rounds with him said enough.
Also we are talking about the aggressive undefeated foreman with his full confidence,forget the jimmy young fight.

 

Oh yes Holmes could be KO'd ..but that only happened when he'd been out almost 2 year's and by a fast explosive Tyson. Holmes was at the top level many years facing a few hard punchers. Yes he was dropped by shavers ..but he's hardly feather fist. And Larry won. He went 13 with cooney ,but Gerry was a younger , hungry guy .No shame in that IMO .Joe Louis had to go 15 with Tommy Farr , Godoy.All champions struggle at times..
This isn't ripping into George. ,I'm a fan of his but there's more to Larry than going 13 with cooney.

To be honest, I can't separate Holmes and Foreman in some ways ..both had strength s that put them above many .Both had old school teaching and old school guts .If either man was around in the last ten years they'd be kicking ass .
