Below is a picture of Tom Sharkey on the left posing with Harry Greb....Greb is listed at 5'8" and so is Sharkey but by this photo it appears Sharkey is 5'5" maybe 5'6" if Grebs height is right and think about how short Greb was compared to the 6'1" Tunney it appears there are some embellishments https://www.google.com/search?q=Gre...UQ7AkISA&biw=994&bih=463#imgrc=14RGMF5WAgvM6M:
I have seen other photo's of older Sharkey, where he looks shorter than claimed. People can actually loose height as they get older. Their height also varies over the course of a day anyway. But who knows?
Look at the angle of the shoe on the far right. Seems like it's on a slope and I'm atleast 90% sure my mind isn't playing tricks on me. The tile Sharkeys heel is on also appears to be lower than the tile behind, hence that line being darker where the tiles change. The guy at the back shoe's don't appear to be on a level playing field either
Well I am fairly sure that as a man ages unless he has had serious bone issues to the point where he is barely standing you don't lose 3+ inches in 10-20 yrs I was 5'11" at 20 and after years of sports, some hard labor jobs and 20 yrs in the Army jumping out of planes I was still 5'11".......and the heels of the shoes the tiles they are standing on and the angle of the shot to add to my observation Sharkey is standing straight and Greb is not with his head down. Kind of makes me wonder looking at his pictures if Sharkey was even 180lbs?
Sharkey is referred to as 5'8" in books and on Box Rec .His weight fluctuated between175 /185lbs. Cyber Zone lists him as 5'8.5".
From all the stories on him he seems relatively unscathed. He looks more like a neighborhod cross guard than an ex boxer.
It also says that Greb was 5'8".....who was the real 5'8" in this picture he looks shorter than Mickey Walker
Ive often wondered about this as well. I dont think the camera is folding space in that photo because despite Sharkey's right foot being out in front you can see his leg is slight extended and his left arm is actually behind and touching Greb's right. Meaning they are indeed shoulder to shoulder and Greb is indeed taller. My guess is Sharkey wasnt as tall as advertised (it wasnt unusual in that era to embellish both weight and height and to make yourself seem more formidable) but probably also shrunk a bit with age.
I would give him an inch of shrinking if he was hunched over etc but he is standing upright and straight actually good posture was a norm in that era compared to today he looks pretty healthy considering the descriptions of his fights....I am sure high def color would certainly show battle scars...but like I said I am at least as old as he was in this photo and I actually find it rare now that I am older and in those circles to find people who have dramatically shrunk more than an inch without debilitating injury or disease. Also when we see Greb in pictures with Tunney and Dempsey and if their heights are close to accurate my guess is Greg was 5'8" and in poses with Walker he is a shade taller and reflects their listed heights
I think 5'8" is accurate for Greb. On occasion Ive seen it listed an inch or half an inch taller but thats uncommon and I dont think accurate.
It may be the angle of the picture & Sharkey not standing strait, I was told he was 5"7 so maybe if he stepped back & stood up the difference would not appear as much. If Greb was 5'8 then Sharkey could have been 5'7 or less in his day....another thing notice Sharkeys pants are long & Grebs are short so while Sharkey may have shrunk, Greb looked like his legs got longer
