the 1974 version of joe frazier(who beat ellis in a rematch/ beat joe bugner/ and beat quarry in a rematch ) v ron lyle of 1974 ? who wins ? personnaly in 74 frazier was still looking good..still looked good in loosing to ali...beat a shot ellis in 74...and beat a shot jerry quarry in 74...who ron lyle lost too in late 73 ...even in 74 frazier had about 80% of him and i think he would wear ron lyle down and win a 12 rd dec ....in a very dangerous fight ....damn i wish this fight happened ,,,,
I'd be confident Frazier would win this. Definitely an intriguing match and one i don't think i've seen discussed all that much surprisingly. I think Joe is a level above Ron.
Frazier wins but it's a wafer thin decision. Joe would be dropped by Lyle twice early and in such Savage fashion that the ref would be readying to jump in. But Frazier comes firing back both times. Both men find themselves rocked as the fight goes on but Joe does the more intense work and gets the decision.
In 1974 i go with your same opinion because lyle was still a little too green. 75-76 lyle beats 75 Frazier. The Ali fight made joe look better than he was actually at that time.stylistically Ali always would have a hard time with joe because Ali could not stop him
Foolish! There was only 1 Foreman. Smokin'Joe beats the **** outof Lyle. TImber convict. Frazier in 5.
Man, the Lyle threads lately! I've got a what if matchup. Lyle vs. Godzilla! "The Green Guy" comes out with an obvious reach and size advantage. Rocks Ron early but that 'huge' punching power starts to wear out the reptile by the mid rounds. The Japanese wrecker starts to tire as the fight continues and eventually wears down. Godzilla resorts to the radioactive breath in an effort to bring the fight back to a pick em' but Ron, who everyone avoided (not), is able to establish his 'ATG' status and send the wannabe reptile into a puddle or, back to the sea in a vicious stoppage. Ron would have been a contender in every era but he simply failed when he had a shot against any top flight guy. Shavers? Godzilla would have had Earnie out quicker than Lyle did and wouldn't have went down from that second round left hook Earnie nailed Ron with. (tongue firmly in cheek)
Lean towards Joe Frazier, but Lyle is a tough match up....Lyle's good for an upset. Remember, Foreman was the underdog going into his fight with Frazier. I'd make Lyle an underdog, too.
Lyle could punch I think thats why. Against certain champions, you have to give him a punchers chance. Most would favor Lennox Lewis against Lyle, but Lyle would have a punchers chance.
Lyle could hit and he could certainly knock Joe down if he catches him right. I don' think he could keep Frazier down or keep him hurt before Joe tagged him back. If you watch Frazier vs Foreman you'l see Foreman land alot of clean punches on Joe. One or two good shots won't cut it with Frazier. He was dirt tough hit pretty hard himself. Foreman wasn't a normal puncher or a normal finisher. He was uncommon.
