There were two investigations made into Clay-Liston I, that both came up empty. And FBI didn't pursue whatever suspicions they may have had, so can this be laid to rest?

    Allegations of a fix:

Because Liston was a prohibitive favorite and had ties to organized crime, many speculated that the fight was fixed.

After a month-long investigation, Florida State Attorney Richard E. Gerstein said there was no evidence to support the claim of a fix.

A United States Senate subcommittee conducted hearings three months later and also found no evidence of a fix.

Documents released to the Washington Times in 2014 under the Freedom of Information Act show the FBI suspected Ash Resnick, a Las Vegas gambler with organized crime connections, of fixing multiple boxing matches, including the first Clay-Liston fight. The documents show no evidence that Ali was in on the scheme or even knew about it. And nothing suggests the bureau ever fully corroborated the suspicions it investigated.

Far easier to cover these things up in the 60s.

Organized crime in boxing was under the cosh in the early 60's. Bobby Kennedy was very invested in it and against organized crime over all.

But the basic point is that if we're going to say that authorities had suspicions about the Liston-Clay fight, we should also be honest enough to say that the investigations of these suspicions came to nothing.

I don't believe it was fix. Sonny clearly got hit and went down. He even got up and the fight continued before Walcott waived it off. The only real suspicious issue is when Sonny rises to one knee and then rolls back over that looks like bad acting.

So Liston suddenly had a glass chin or was he always susceptible to quick right hands to average punchers like Ali? If so why is this never brought up in any fantasy matchups here involving Liston?

I haven't seen anything to that effect. But if anyone has, please post. This is about the first fight, mind you.

Don’t matter if it’s about the first fight. If he didn’t have a glass jaw in the second fight and took a dive then that increases the chances that the first was also fixed. If it wasn’t fixed then why is the fact that Liston had no heart and quit on his stool never brought up in fantasy matchups here involving Liston?

I agree neither fight was legitimate and Liston didn't have a glass jaw. Cops used to break nightstands over his head and it didn't do anything to him!

So they DID have evidence to support it was a fix.
