dundee admitted to cheating during the first cooper fight. cooper dropped ali, hard, and he was hurt. dundee knew it. thats why dundee sliced open ali's gloves, to by him time to recover. dundee admitted this. if he was capable of doing this, what else could have done in other fighters?
first up, assuming someone would poison someone just becos they might have cut a glove is clearly deluded. Thats like assuming Lance Armstrong was doing a Jimmy Saville on the side just cos he was capable of cheating in sport. And secondly - it didnt buy him time, thats been debunked. moreoever, you are referring to an ali who got up instantly and walked straight back to his corner unaided and fine. ITS YOU who is cheating here. In your defence, everyones capable of doing all sorts, esp when theres big money involved. Whether they chose to is different.
Goodonya Herol, the whole " Dundee cheated to save Clay " is one of the biggest myths proposed by youngsters and Ali haters online. They try n claim that Ali-Clay was somehow gone when Cooper dropped him. As you said he got straight up like he did every other time he was decked ( Sonny Banks actually dropped Clay worse in my opinion ) and he calmly walked back to his corner with a disgusted look on his face. The whole glove myth is classic " Pommie - Aussie " whinging ( us Aussies learned it from you blokes ). The time between rounds was timed at about 10 seconds max over what it should have been. Another myth is that Ali ducked a rematch with Foreman. Anyone who was actually closely following boxing at that time realise what tosh that is.
Dundee actually admitted to giving an already torn glove a bit of a tug, thats hardly the same as " cutting " the glove. Its a shame how much the classic forum has changed. Some of the newer peeps that post here don't exactly know much about boxing history. They simply parrot what they have read other posters state as fact. Cheers All.
Dundee made many references to his genius actually aiding ali throught his career with him. He was selling himself well. The issue here is YOU only looking at ONE of them, and not the lot...and still misinterpreting him selling himself. Because of this - The gloves were NOT replaced. Dundee just fibbed to you and you didnt notice. Hes an awesome self-promoter.
from dundees own words, What happened at the end of that round has become part of boxing folklore. “They accused me of cutting the gloves,” said Dundee. “Can you imagine me doing something like that? There was a rip in the gloves. All I did was make it a little bigger. They’re hunting around for gloves and I’m buying my man time.” Clay went on to stop Cooper on cuts in the following round. and i stand corrected on the cutting. my mistake!
Good onya mate Herol is on the money as far as what a great self promoter Ange was. He was also a great story teller and a guy who was always positive in his public statements, interviews and persona. The Miami 5th st gym was one of the great boxing meccas in the day. Guys like Luis Rodriguez, Willie Pastrano and Cassius Clay all trained there.
Foreman was beyond overrated. Ali merely exposed that. Beat the longest line of bums ever. Then beat an imposter of a man that used to be Joe Frazier, then a terrified Norton. This created the myth. Ali cruelly exposed his limitations. Lyle then confirmed aspects of those limitations, albeit in defeat. If there were any doubts, then Jimmy Young rubber stamped their existence. Foreman knew the game was up and retired. Credit due, he came back and did well for his age, albeit his list of big wins is very limited for a man rated by many as an ATG. I don't dislike or not rate the man, he has his place in history, but he is vastly overrated IMO.
