Massively disagree here. I thought Groves may be in trouble in the last minute but I hadn't noticed his shoulder had gone. Right near the end of that round he catches Jr twice with two lovely right hands and Jr looked ready to go, to me. I forget which round but he timed Jr with a lovely 1-2 and he his legs froze right up. Had Groves taken a more gamble he could have gotten him out of there and I say that quite confidently. But I'm glad he didn't take the risk. He had absolutely no need to

If anyone is arsed, I scored it 9-3. Thought the 2KD's should have been counted too. Someone on BadLeftHook in the comments section has provided some gifs of the KD's if anyone wants to have another look at them

one of them was a slip, the other was 100% a knockdown, he was hit on the way down so its a legit knockdown.

Groves landed far more cleaner punches than Eubank, that was clear, he also dictated the pace of the fight, and controlled the. Groves threw more punches, landed more punches and was more economical with his punches. I had it 118-109 i think. Thats was being fairly generous to Eubank other than the last round it could have been a shutout.

If he fought GGG when he had the chance I think it would have potentially been a career ending fight so I don't have no problem with him not taking that fight in one sense but they way they shouted and demanded it and then ran away when it was delivered was embarrassing.

Please tell me the 4-5 rounds Jr won? The 12th yeah, Groves shoulder was out of its socket. I'm struggling to remember another he won.

But I scored it 118-110 Groves, so he must have won another, anyway I'll accept 117-111 but anything closer than 9-3 is just wrong in my opinion.

It wasn't close, it just wasn't, the only people I've seen try and say it was close was deluded Jr himself and deluded Jr Fans.. Oh the visually impaired judge who scored it 115-113.

I mean, come on, even Sr said the result was fair, he never said "the cards were too wide".

Was an easy win for groves for me. But no sure why billy Joe Saunders is used as the blueprint to beat eubank. Eubank got to billy Joe. People talking about billy Joe tiring being the only reason. But that is eubanks gameplan. Everyone knows he,s not great technically....as people have said he can't throw a straight right hand. I ve no idea what a fundamental coach could bring to his game without a straight right hand.

What they,ve done is went for output...workrate. Accumulation punching. Slashing punches. Hooks/uppercuts. And they,ve worked at it relentlessly. I still say eubanks got further than he would have got with fundamental training. His natural reflexes aren,t good enough. He can't throw a straight right hand. Billy did cause him problems...because billy gives all of them problems. He was sharp that night under tibbs. Got off first but eubank used his superior strength and workrate....to turn that fight around.

If it showed the blueprint to beat eubank it also showed the blueprint to beat billy Joe. Bearing in mind eubank won it on one of the cards. Think it was decided by one judge by a single point.

Against groves it was a different story. The extra weight of groves totally negated eubanks ways to win. Eubank wasn't stronger on the inside. His whole gameplan is to get inside....he can't punch long afterall. The problem was he found out inside he was weaker than groves. People think the main problem was getting inside. The bigger problem was he knew inside he wasn't the stronger man. Groves would have hurt him on the inside...but it discouraged him enough from trying to fight inside. Leaving groves to beat him up on the outside. Forced eubank into just bullrushing him and hope he got him with something. He didn't,t really fight inside. He never planted inside. He couldn't compete with the extra weight on the inside. That's what made it an easy night for groves.

People looking too much into this loss for eubank. The deciding factor was the weight. I m asking people if its a technical problem....why hasn't golovkin moved up. The truth is for all golovkins technical greatness...he,d also find it a lot harder against the big supermiddles. He found it hard going against Jacobs. Jacobs isn,t a masterful boxer...he just came in a good bit heavier than golovkin.

Embank will still beat technical fighters. He just won't do it at supermiddle.

    Honestly?

I'll have to rewatch it because quite frankly I didn't see Groves as that dominant at all. Even some of the rounds I gave to Groves were nip and tuck affairs.

Highlights package that shows Eubank having some success. This does seem slightly biased in favour of Junior but still, it shows it wasn't this clinic it's being portrayed as.

9-3 might easily be a fair score, though i think it was tighter. Just that a lot of those rounds were fairly close, it's not like Groves dominated every 30 seconds of every round.

    He shaded a few.

Closer than people are making out.

This was a total case of a fighter so in belief he is that good that he wins the fight before it’s fought. One thing also came out of this fight is that JR has not got the concussive punch needed to be anywhere near world elite. He could however strip his team and start all afresh away from all the BS around his dad and trainer and potentially come back as a legit world champ but has to work on listening to people, sitting on his shots more and not imitating a windmill when he’s not getting his own way. He has speed and grit but needs the rest to make it to the top. Booth would be a perfect trainer match for him with no outside interference.

Great posts by N17 in this thread. Groves never gets the respect he deserves. Eubank now not getting the respect he deserves. He did ok, did a hell of a lot better than most boxers do against Groves.

@PaddyGarcia would love to see them GIF’s mate.

Fitness was BJS’s undoing. I’m confident that Eubank barely lands anything more than the odd shot here and there against him now, in a shut out.

I’m not writing Junior off. His athleticism & chin get him to fringe world level. However, he is massively lacking in boxing fundamentals. He is going to have to be very careful who he is matched with in future or he will be made to look amateurish again mate.

It’s not too late to learn and adapt. I’m not saying he can completely change his fighting identity & suddenly become a skilful fighter, that ship sailed a long time ago. He can learn to improve that transition from outside to inside better. He can improve his jab, he can learn to feint & disguise that dodgy footwork. He can also learn to stop making it so obvious that he’s loading up. It’s just little subtleties that he can add to his game. He could learn a ton from Ricky Hatton imo.

Good post. I watched the fight again on my commute this morning. First time, watching live, I felt Groves had given Eubank a real lesson. On second watch it is closer than that, and talk of Eubank being beaten up in some Lacey-esque dismantling is over the top.
I think part of the reason it seemed like a real lesson for Eubank is because his elite level confidence had built up a level of expectation that wasn't matched - wasn't even nearly matched. Eubank was wild and it's fair to say he was given a boxing lesson and shown 'levels'. But this wasn't a career ending beatdown.

it wasnt terribly one sided in terms of a beating to Eubank it was very one sided in terms of scoring a fight though, very wide you could argue Jnr at max winning two rounds and when you add in at least 1 knockdown it made the scoring even wider. The scorecards were far closer than they should have been IMO.

Eubanks a big strong middleweight with a great engine good chin and damaging accumulation puncher at middleweight anyway. Tell me how Sam eggington was able to beat Frankie Gavin for example. Frankie Gavin suffered from the same thing eubank did at the weekend and their was nothing wrong with Frankie's technical ability. He ruined his own career by refusing to drain himself on the scales. Was like man against boy against kell brook. Again there was very little problems with Frankie's technique. It was still useless against a much bigger/stronger opponent.

Carl frochs technique left a lot to be desired. How did he beat slick guys? He found them difficult just the same as eubank did...but he ended up drowning Taylor. He ended up knocking out groves. Both slicker and technically better than him. Eubank will do it the same way. Just needs to get back to draining himself down...so his attributes aren,t negated like they we,re against groves. That at the weekend was,nt a problem exclusive to Chris eubank junior...all of them will have have difficulties bridging that 8 lb difference.

Eubanks got two big problems....one is the middleweight division has two of the best fighters in the sport...its a very good division atm. His other big problem is fighting without a straight right hand. Fighting fundamentall correctly or not...that's a gamebreaker.

He,s still had success without it tho. He did get inside against billy joe. He will tire middleweights out with his pace etc. He just won't tire supermiddles out because they,ll deal with the pressure he's trying to put them under. He doesnt hit hard enough at supermiddle. Groves was stronger than eubank inside. The middleweights barring golovkin, jocobs and canelo won't have that same advantage.

Groves was 13 stone 2 in ring and has the physique for it. What is golovkin coming in at. Why did golovkin struggle against Jacobs? Who came into the ring huge that night.

People underestimating how much the scales play a massive part in world level boxing. If your not draining at the scales...you will struggle at that level even if your technique is great. Eubank got done at the weekend by naivety more than technical ability.
