Well, It depends on which Max Baer shows up. If you have the Baer who was motivated and focused ( Schmeling or Carnera matches ), he'd likely win. But if you have the lazy Baer, the apathetic Baer, or a night where he has little defense, he's getting stopped by Morrison. Morrison is underrated here. Remember he boxed in the 1990's, a time where the talent was excellent at heavyweight and had the misfortune of facing the best versions of Lennox Lewis and Ray Mercer. When you consider who was ranked in the 1930's, just imagine what if Tommy was there.
Well, that fight wasn't exactly getting the "crap beat" out of anybody. Look, I think Baer could beat Morrison, but I wouldn't bet on it because I don't think much of Max Baer. But I would be surprised if Morrison beat any good fighter because I think very very little of Tommy Morrison.
that would be you, but you're much smaller joke, dont flatter yourself. Baer >>> Morrison, both on screen and off.
Baer. Great chin to back up his big punch. Morrison is brave as hell, but he certainly isn't as durable as he is brave.
Here's a true classic for those that like the sweet science. One can really learn a lot from the refined technique on display here. It's not everyday you see technique like this: This content is protected 5:33 "Neither of these men care much for the science of boxing" Yeah ... even in 1940 they knew Baer was as crude as ****. That fight reminded me of the Protea Hotel in Springs on Friday night after 10pm. Notice how easily the sloppy Galento manages to land on Baer. He even out-slugs him at certain points in the 4th and 5th. Now imagine Morrison.
To continue in this vein, here's Foreman vs Morrison highlights: This content is protected Notice: 1) Tommy is able to repeatedly slip punches from Foreman 2) Tommy does get hit with some pretty serious shots from Foreman and is just fine. Eg :43 of the 12th 3) Tommy leads with the jab, a punch Baer has only hear rumours about 4) Tommy is able to counter Foreman with some ferocious hooks that straighten his legs out for him. 5) Old Foreman despite his age, is still a better opponent than Galento. As dirty, too, considering the series of thunderous low blows he scored on Tommy's pillbox.
LOL.....I'll just say that Max's punch and chin give him a chance here. Max was one of those fighters who because of that, could likely beat better skilled fighters (skilled up to a point). I wouldn't pick him to beat a Wlad or Lewis, Morrison he has a decent chance against, even as an underdog.
Baer has more natural talent, he effortlessly hurts his opponents like few heavies I have ever seen. Much in the vein of Foreman. He was however, extremely crude and lacked even rudimentary skills or fundamentals. His footwork is non existent. To me Baer is a great what if, what if he took the time to learn a jab, to focus 3 minutes of every round. He would of been seriously dangerous. Because he had true next level power for his era. Morrison is light years ahead of Baer in offensive skill set, and would likely batter Max making the fight look like a total mismatch but the thing is Max, Max could take it. Now Tommy is much bigger than the men Max fought and heavier so could Max still take it? That's the question, If he could this fight would be a total repeat of Morrison vs Mercer. Another opponent totally outskilled by Morrison who was able to take it until Tommy tired out. Watch Baer vs Nova I forget which fight, but there are some great close up shots from ringside, and you can see how vicious Baer's body shots were and Baer was past it here. Man if the man only took the sport seriously. Baer looks like garbage in most of his fights but then you look at the resume ledger 59Ko's and even several of the men who beat him, were dropped during the fight. Historically I rate Baer much higher, which to me is more important than mythical h2h imo. H2h I would favor Morrison, same size, 15lbs heavier and more skilled. Still I don't Rule Baer out.
I'm not quite sure why people think these two fighters are even remotely on the same level, hence needing a vs match up? Crude as Baer is, his ability was enough that he notched wins over quality, top tier heavyweights like Max Schmeling. He destroyed the pretenders of his day in fighters like Primo Carnera, and even years past his own best ground down the competent, durable and more than likely equal himself the match of Tommy Morrison, Tony Galento.
Morrison would burn himself out in the first few rounds. He would have been a great fighter if he could manage to pace himself and not get over excited. Baer KO 5, if you thought Mercer was a brutal knockout just wait until you see this one.
