Arturo Gatti comes to mind. What a heart he had. Exciting fighter also. A warrior.

You mentioned the Wilson Rodriguez fight. Even as Gatti`s career goes that one always stood out to me. Not because Rodriguez was the best of the bunch but the extreme that fight went to. I only saw it live that one time but my memory has me believing that he was beating the hell out of Gatti. It was almost seemed fake it was such a dramatic finish.

Andy Lee, who incidentally retired for the sport today, had a few.

You can add Dynamite Douglas to this list as well. Saad was dropped and hurt badly after dominating Billy. Billy swarmed and had Saad reeling all over the ring. A round or two later Saad buzzed buzzed him and the ref immediately jumped in and stopped it. Kind of a bull**** stoppage because Saad had been more hurt by Douglas earlier and the ref didnt stop it.

    Nice.

I've never seen that fight as I have never been able to get it - maybe it was not televised?

I did have a Boxing Magazine that reported on the fight - it shows Saad's left hand striking what appears to be a badly puffed up face of Billy "Dynamite" Douglas."

If I remember correctly (it's been over 25 yrs since I last read the report), the referee justified his decision to stop the fight saying:

"They were both taking very heavy punishment, but Franklin was fighting back when hurt, whereas Douglas was not when I stopped it." Or something to that effect.

I remember the caption of the photo said "Billy Douglas looks the worse for wear during his Crueling (did he mean "Grueling" fight against Matthew Franklin."

it was in World Boxing or International Boxing and I lost that issue at some point in time.

It really was a Rocky type fight. Gatti took a terrible beating over the first four rounds, including being dropped, battered in the corner and having one eye completely closed, but he turned a corner at the end of the 4th I think it was when Rodriguez realised that no matter what he threw, Gatti would keep coming back. Gatti then dropped Rodriguez with a body shot in the 5th, but even then the one punch KO in the 6th was dramatic.

I would venture the thought that Douglas actually was fighting back more when hurt. Thats what made the fight so crazy. Douglas would be hurt and reeling but then out of nowhere hed start swinging. Thats how he caught Saad. When Saad got hurt he was just getting battered. It wasnt a bad stoppage if it occured in a vacuum but in the context of that fight it was. It looked like Saad was being protected a bit because if you were gonna stop Douglas at that moment you could have easily stopped Saad a round earlier because he was every bit as hurt and shaky then. Good fight though. As a side note Panama Lewis of the padded glove controversy was working one of the corners (cant remember which now). Also it was not televised.

Bought the Greb book....amazing manifesto! Can't imagine the research it took
to compile all that information and to organize it into a very readable book.
    Well done, sir!

    David Izon was another one.

Darroll Wilson - Izon was knocked down and on the verge of being stopped in the 1st round, when he was staggering badly. Izon came back and KOd Wilson in 4th.

Terrance Lewis - Izon was knocked down again, came back and stopped Lewis in 5th.

Derrick Jefferson - Izon was battered for 7 rounds, took it all, Jeffreson gassed and Izon stopped him in 9th

Tua. Since you mentioned Izon. Tua was the king of being way behind on the cards to come back and score a KO. He sometimes had to do it with a cheap shot after the bell but he did it.

Frank Fletcher. His slugfest in the 80's were TV classic's . His wars with
Ernie Singletary , Sammy Nesmith , Wilford Scypion , Clint Jackson and
Noberto Sabater were all action but the Animal always prevailed .
