In hindsight.... Buster fought on the undercard of three Mike Tyson's fights (in a row) before he got his shot. Buster had probably been studying Tyson after all his fights. And when his opportunity came, He was extremely well prepared for Tyson and it showed in their fight that led to the big upset.

I think most people on the planet had studied Tyson as he was on the TV all the time.....

Tyson's Chin had not been seriously tested and the first time it was he buckled.

It may be significant, or it may not.

Douglas's father definitely saw him as a potential champion, and was building him up towards that objective.

It was just that James did not have the mindset for it, or at least so it seemed.

Yeah, it's a hard situation to quantify in meaning of significance. Good post.

When Tyson fought Tony Tucker.. .Tucker lifted him off the ground with an uppercut in the first round and Tyson kept fighting like it was nothing......his chin had been checked before that and he was taking Douglas shots pretty well considering how many flush shots he took

Blows me away that people in this day and age, of being able to view almost any fight at any given time, or any number of portable devices and even phones... with the internet as accessible as it is... and people still talk about Mike Tyson and his career in an uninformed manner, such as saying he was never hit with a good punch before the Douglas fight is borderline ******ation, honestly.

For me, Douglas won against Ferguson in 1985-05-09, what might have led to a fight (much) earlier.
Would a young Douglas prevail vs. (green) Tyson?

I don't think so, personally. I think he needed a bit of seasoning & experience before turning in the actual Tyson performance we saw. Have to remember he also had to overcome being hurt in the Tyson fight, something Douglas had explicitly not done in earlier fights against the likes of Tony Tucker. It's a skill and an ability he had to acquire over time.

Lets give the guy a go - there are worse threads than this appearing on a daily basis.

At worst Buster would have got some experience with big excited crowds.

I depend on Mr. Thomas to keep me informed on the Aussie boxing situations of which I know very little. All I do know, they have some strange hopping marsupials and some big bass Bats in the "Down Under"..per my Oil & Gas buddies.
