Well, for the next couple of Thai cards they've imported Team Indonesia as the away squad for the homespun talents of the Land of Smiles to lump on, but the next important fight on their soil will be in March, when Toto Landero travels west of Luzon for the first time in his career to challenge Thamanoon Niyomtrong aka Knockout CP Freshmart in his 4th defense of the full WBA straw title (his previous 4-bout reign, Buitrago I through Buitrago II having been for the interim version while Hekkie Budler was the regular champ...until he beat the man that beat Hekkie).

Curiously, this will be Knockout's second consecutive Filipino opponent after having previously faced two consecutive Japanese preceded by two consecutive Nicaraguan challengers.

At first glance Landero seems a cherry picked voluntary but he did score an upset over Vic Saludar last year.

...another Pinoy straw who may be (re)entering the world title hunt is Denver Cuello, whose nagging shoulder issues reportedly finally corrected by surgery last year and who actually had planned on returning to action last month.

So unfortunate Cuello had those shoulder issues. He should easily have beaten Zhong and been a world champion but he only fought with one arm for like 90% of that fight. This was a guy who destroyed Ganigan Lopez and Juan Hernandez (ignore that BS DQ call), two guys that managed to win world titles after their fight with Cuello. He's looking to return in April, and based on photos from Facebook, he's nowhere near fighting shape. He's 31 now. Hopefully he's successful in his comeback.

I'm about to add this to BoxRec.... @IntentionalButt's favorite Edison Berwela will take on another undefeated prospect, Brock Jarvis of Australia, 12-0 (11 KOs), March 2.

Carlos Magali has stepped in as late-notice replacement for Cristian Mijares to challenge Miguel Berchelt on February 10th for the super featherweight green belt.

Brave move but hard to imagine Magali has a shot here. You may remember him as the man that inadvertently killed Davey Browne Jr. in the ring a few years ago with a come-from-behind 12th-round upset KO (Browne was supposedly lined up to face Anthony Mundine if he got past Magali; his brother Tommy just fought a torrid blitzkrieg with Mundine and lost). Aside from Browne his biggest wins to date are Mark John Yap x2 and Mark Gil Melligen x2. Not shabby, but that's a huge leap from them all the way to Berchelt.

This was Michael Fareñas' last outing, from last June, btw:

I hadn't even realized he was still active following the unsuccessful challenge of then-IBF champ José Pedraza in 2014 (which unfortunately squandered the nice momentum he built up by defeating 18-0 prospect Mark "Too Sharp" Davis on FNF) - but apparently he regrouped for two bouts at home in Panagaque City in 2015, and took a couple of years off before dipping his toes in the pool again. He looks pretty sharp here considering the rust, and if he's serious about making a comeback he's a welcome addition in the 140lb picture, where there's a considerable drop-off in quality and "plateau of parity" once you get past Garcia and Crawford (who's onto greener pastures anyway).

Rey Pérez exposing Golden Boy prospect Christian González live on ESPN2 at the moment. Really impressive underdog-on-the-road performance (which is of course a familiar theme in Pinoy boxing...)

    Here's my take.

Romero Duno doesn't have jab and his left hook is slappy. Good right hand but without that set up hard jab like Ancajas. Basically a one handed boxer.

I love Magsayo from ALA gym this kid needs a real world class traier. Magsayo's footwook is a mess it's all over the place. Sometimes he crosses his feet and at times off balanced. But as far as speed and power he has plenty. He is also plenty sloppy. LOL. Terrible stamina.

Tepora is a solid young boxer in the featherweight division. Work man like, nothing flashy, fundamentally sound. He seems well schooled coming from the same gym as Ancajas or they trained together.

    My pick is Tepora.

Ah. Well like I said this isn't really meant to be a place to make predictions about who's going to end up being "great" and then gloat about it. This is more just to celebrate the positive aspects of Filipino boxing at every level.

Donnie Nietes is currently ⅓ of the way through a probable shutout against Juan Carlos Reveco - probably will go down as his biggest win since Porpramook eleven years ago (meaning it will be his 2nd best ever; the ink is all but dry on his legacy of accomplishment unless he is blessed with some CRAZY longevity and manages to keep up this form another couple of years while unifying the division with victories over Dalakian, Kimura and Higa)
