Out of the 3 best fighters to come from the same era who do you think had the best set of skills in terms of pure boxing ability? Who displayed more variety in their style?

I would sat Willie Pep, because he had to box the most. Charles and Robinson were both boxer punchers, Charles was more towards the boxer side, at least after his opponent died and Robinson more towards the puncher side. They both had power while Pep didn't have that much. Pep too also was able to do things like go through a round without throwing a punch. Against smaller men who are usually faster with higher work rates. The counter argument to this, would be Pep's athleticism and speed. That is something all three had though.

All things considered I pick Willie Pep. They all had a wealth of skills and were well rounded, so a case could be made for any of them, and I'm open minded to all discussion.

Flo I want to say great topic! I appreciate heavyweights, but they get boring over time.

Id side with Willie Pep we don't even have prime footage of him and his skill set is still very high.

Pep had to be the most skilled boxer, Robinson had real power in both hands & Charles had a bit of each....Pep was the most skilled Robinson was equipped & Charles had a little of everything but they were all deep in experience & gifts

so SRR is the top Pep next with Ezz at 3rd

I dont think you can put Pep or Charles over one another. They were as good as it gets in the skills department.

Pep was a defensive wizard but all around I think it is a toss up between Charles and Robinson they could box, slip punches, punch and great killer instinct

Automatically i think Pep but SRR and Charles were extremely good technicians within their own styles. Robinson had so much raw talent, awesome speed and power and he was such a great athlete inside the ropes.

In terms of "pure boxing ability" per the thread ask i'll go Pep then SRR then Charles. In terms of variety within their own style i'll go SRR then Charles then Pep. The second part is tough as "within their own" style isn't totally clear to me. For example is SRR's pure boxing against Maxim going outside his own style? I'd think not as he is a boxer/puncher.

Pep had the best footwork and movement and defensive skills.

Robinson had great athletic talent and some of the best attacking arsenal (body and head) in the history of the sport.

Charles was complete in both defensive and attacking aspects without being as outstanding as the other two in the respective aspects they excelled in.

All 3 were awesome talents but I'd go Robinson, Pep, Charles in order. But we are talking 3 of the best to ever do it and I might be biased because Robinson is the more aesthetically pleasing personally speaking.

The least complete is the best technical here .. Pep did not have the power or the strength of the other two .. his margin for error was less as was his ability to equalize with power .. he was an exceptional fighter for a reason and that was his other skills ..
