Ray Charles Leonard vs. Marvin Nathaniel Hagler - ESPN2 HD @ 12:30am EST!

He had a lot of power at the time after beating Marvin and being so visible on HBO. With Hearns he was very cocky, pointing at his chin on some of the ABC interviews like I what I think Alex Wallua. Trying to get to Hearns, which I think backfired on Ray a little. A fight I would have liked to have seen, since Barkley fought both Hearns and Duran in memorable fights was Leonard vs. Barkley.

 

Marvin fought ok with Ray, but yeah he was so ineffective at times. And his jab was not great in this fight. I think a rematch would have gone similarly and might have been a better fight- Marvin would have come out more aggressive from the start and maybe stopped Ray in the late rounds. Ray wanted no part of an angry Marvin. He knew he won the first fight and didn't want the rematch. Had he only retired after Duran 3. or at least just fought his generation of guys like Hearns 3 or a Barkley fight.

 

The exact thing you are mentioning I can see that in my head like it was yesterday. Ray backing up waving his fist and Marvin mimicking Ray's wave as he walks forward shaking his right hand in the air, yet looking so frustrated and Ray still outmaneuvering him as Ray is exhausted. And Marvin getting close and hitting Ray to the body with those arm punches and Ray putting his body close to Marvin's to make the blows less.

Rumors are that Ray Leonard was owned by the Gambino family back then. I had Hagler winning the fight.............

 

I'm not a fan of SRL, but he whooped Hagler's ass. I like Marvin an ATG fighter but I wish he could finally find the balls to admit that he lost that fight. Where was the urgency? The man who wore a hat that said WAR on it, the guy who went toe to toe with Hearns, Mugabi and other opponents. BTW I think Leonard was given a gift in the rematch against Hearns, and I loved when he was beaten by Terry Norris and Hector Camacho, so I'm not playing favorites here.

 

I like to check these guys judging records who make terrible scorecards in important fights. You know this isn't the only fight they've messed up. It never is. I'm running down a list of the thousands of fights this guy judged. He's judging Mayweather, Montiel, Baldomir, Morales, Johnston, Arbachakov, Tua, Tyson, Benn vs McClellan, Nelson, Arguello, Buddy McGirt, Norris, Jackson, Sot Chitalada. He was a popular man in the 80s-90s. Lots of plums. Lots of opportunities to screw people's careers up.

I haven't seen this fight but he contributed to a SD in Roccigiani vs Nunn scoring hard for the loser Nunn.

Not only did he score Saoul Mamby vs Nwankpa the opposite of the other two judges, but he somehow found three extra points they didn't. How did that happen? One of the other judges had it 145-143 for Mamby and he had it 145-146.
