How much do they mean for Hearns' legacy?

Virgill Hill was two-time LHW and CW champion of the world, won 22 title fights at LHW. Past-prime Hearns beat him to capture WBA LHW title in Hill's 11th defence.

Nate Miller was an iron-chinned CW world champion with wins vs Bert Cooper, Orlin Norris (great KO), Dwight Qawi among others. Lost his title just 1,5 year prior to Hearns fight, Tommy was already 40 at that time.

He receives a fairly good amount of credit from the modern fan for the Hill fight I believe, less so perhaps for the Miller fight because Miller is a much more obscure name and far lesser people have been exposed to him as a fighter so the name doesn't do anything for anyone.

I remember that Hearns/Miller fight. It happened in England on a Hamed undercard.. Hearns won a decision. I had not seen that fight for years, and thought Hearns had a easy win, until I saw the fight once on youtube. Hearns had a tough time with him. Miller was big. Hearns had to use speed and not get into a fight.

Though an Olympic Medalist on a legendary U.S. team and a Hall of Famer Virgil Hill just could not get over the top on the legacy matches of Jones, Hearns and even Michalczewski.

I thought the Henry Maske fight was a legacy match. Again, Hill is underrated.

Its true Hill is under rated and yes I would categorize Maske as a legacy fight.. . . .sadly for him and his fans the second fight with Maske Virgil took at 190 lbs and agonized to melt down to make the weight.

The Hill win means a lot. The Miller, win, not so much.

The Hill win was one of his career best. The Miller is a bit underrated as former welterweight Hearns beat a former 190 pound champ.

I think he is underrated also.. He was a great fighter, the problem with Hill is something which Hearns and Leonard and Duran and Hagler all had. The ability to up their game in the big fights. Hill had trouble uping his game for that great win.. Against Hearns he fought the same as he would fight anyone else. He was great, but he was what he was. He was great, but to say all time great. I am not sure..

I was surprised Hearns was matched with Nate Miller since Hearns was 41 years old at the time.

I remember that fight. Miller fought very passively and Hearns won a wide decision. A good win for Tommy

Great post. Hill was definitely not an an ATG. He was a solid professional in every sense of the word. Not withstanding the times he entered the fight with a freshly broken nose, e.g., the Hearns fight, he entered the ring in prime physical (cardio) condition. I’m sure Germans would tell you that Hill has at least one GREAT win...against Henry Maske.

Yes, Miller and Hearns were both past it. A win over Miller would have been significant if it had happened in the early '90s, not when they actually fought.
