Juan Miguel Elorde (grandson of Flash) just won his first career 12-rounder, by UD. He made his pro debut a decade ago, losing just once in his only trip abroad: when 10-0 he was defeated by Texan super bantam prospect Jerry Guevara, then 6-0 but who ended up going 2-3-1 in his next 6 after Elorde. Juan has since fought exclusively at home in the PI and mostly in the Grand Ballroom named after his grandad, taking on meager opposition. His best scalp is probably Caem Rasmanudin, dropping him thrice and kayoing him in four (but then again, that hardly puts him in exclusive company as Rasmanudin had been stopped eight times before and seven more in the couple of years since.

Anybody seen him in action? Is he even remotely gifted, or are they just protecting him to pad up his record & ego as pure nepotism?

There's loads of pressure on relatives of ATG's. Just ask poor Sal Sanchez II, or Buddy McGirt Jr., or ...the list goes on. Germane to our thread here, ask the current generation of Peñalosa boys.

His wins over Fuentes and Rodriguez are better than Porpramook tbh. Those two and the Reveco knockout last night are IMO his best 3 wins. Looks like he wants to move up to 115 right now, but we’ll see. He beats Dalakian and Kimura at 112. As for Higa, the Japanese may be a bit much for someone at Nietes’ age.

Juan Miguel is average. But he’s probably slightly better than his brother Bai (Juan Martin). He’s highly ranked by the WBO, who love their Pinoys, at 122. The Brothers are promoted by the Flash’s son, their father (or is it their uncle? I’m not sure).

As a promoter, Bebot Elorde, at this point of his career, doesn’t put up a lot of competitive fights for his fighters. Bai was also highly ranked and Bebot finally pulled the trigger and sent him abroad again against someone with a pulse. Bai got knocked out so we’ll see what he does with Migs. Probably hold out on a world title shot but today’s fight was actually a pretty decent match up for someone at his level.

So which risk would you prefer to see him take - venture into the unknown and see if he can navigate super fly with his defense & chin (even having never fought people that big, and with legs sure to at least gradually be slowing at 35) or just post up at fly and roll the dice on being able to conquer Dalakian and both young Japanese titlists? Or lower the degree of difficulty but ensure his legacy's security and just make a couple more IBF defenses and call it a day?

At his age, I’d rather see him move up to 115 and get the big ass money fight he deserves.

Fair, just remember what happened to Omar Narváez, whose circumstances then (and overall career trajectory) were pretty similar to Nietes' - he was a darling of the diehards, respected for his longevity and consistent technical form against B graders even though he never racked up many big recognizable names on his W column (through little fault of his own, just not much global coverage of the weight range), and may have been a little guilty of babysitting titles and being a homebody...ultimately got a little greedy and went for a title in his third weight class and ended up instantly realizing how outmatched in size he was and in one fell swoop, putting in a negative enough performance on the biggest stage of his life that made it nigh impossible for his fan base to defend him any longer while the casuals branded him an eyesore that should never be televised again. Substitute in "fourth weight class" instead of "third" for Nietes and this exact sentence could end up being applicable he if he jumped up and fought, say, Wangek.

Any way to view Gerrypens Promotions' cards? Do they ever stream them anywhere?

Interesting to check out Malaysian cruiser prospect Muhammad Farkhan tomorrow morning if possible.

The Games and Amusements Board FB Page sometimes streams Filipino cards through FB Live but they don’t usually give a heads up until they’re just about to go live.

Sometimes there will be people doing a FB Live through their phones, trainers or someone close to the promotion but that’s all I could think of for the GerryPens card. All these Filipino promoters need to get up to speed and start streaming their cards and not let the commission do the work. Only ones that have done so, or tried to do so (that I can think of), is Sanman Promotions and MB Promotions.

Jessie Cris Rosales this morning rebounded from his KO2 loss to Jhonny González last August by going into the Victorian backyard of Ibrahama Balla to score a KO2 upset and snatch the WBA Oceania featherweight title.

Balla was 13-1, his previous loss also coming at the hands of a Filipino invader (Neil John Tabanao).

I was watching this at like 3AM last night and that knockout came out of nowhere. Rosales was landing some punches here and there before it happened but Balla was taking them well and getting the better of the action. The punches that did it didn’t even look that powerful considering how much affected he was by them. Australian glass it seems.
