Calzaghe was a top fighter, will be remembered as one of the ATG Supermiddleweights...Shame he only really stepped up towards the end...though he still beat some good fighters in the earlier part of his reign... Hatton was overrated in his prime but is perhaps underrated now. He wasn’t elite but he was very good, particularly at light welterweight. He was underrated in terms of his skills as a boxer too...outclassed malignaggi with his boxing skills...definitely over the hill when he fought pacquiao...
Both to an extent. Hatton had an ugly brawling style but was charismatic and only lost to the best of his era. Calzaghe was brilliant but bar Kessler and Lacy had an extremely padded record so tough to know how good he actually was
It was boxers like calzaghe hatton and naz that got me into boxing, loved the hype of hatton fights, calzaghe was just class and naz unbelievably entertaining... Love how people try to say calzaghe fought Hopkins and Jones when they were over the hill, yet they still fought on for years after!
Honestly think hatton is now underrated and calzaghe overrated. Fans call for the big fights....and yet when they do get made and the guy falls short he,s then seen as no good. Calzaghe was a good fighter but he was a bit of a coward as a fighter in honesty. I still say most people thought hatton was the better fighter. Till he got beat then it kind of turned on its head overnight. The difference was hatton fought mayweather whereas calzaghe fought Jeff Lacey. Who pretty much froze on the night and didn,t have or get a good win on his resume. Big difference in the quality of the two divisions as well. I,ll remember hatton a lot more favorably when it was all said and done. People think Ricky got the casuals onboard with talk of man city and man of the people. It helped. But especially in them early days he was fantastic to watch. Few fighters could work an opponent over like hatton could. Hatton was a pressure fighter. People don't seem to judge them as highly for some reason. But it takes different ways to skin a cat. He was a skilled fighter at what he was trying to do. Great angles. Relentless. Brutal body shots. He also did have great stamina. Didn't give opponents time to breath in there. Fast feet. Decent feet as well. Was a nightmare keeping hatton off you. You could make a very good list for calzaghe as well tbf. Calzaghe was better technically. Even tho he was a bit unorthodox himself with his slapping. I still say the biggest difference between them was hattons division was a lot better. Overall they we,re on near enough the same level. Calzaghe got slightly lucky in his career. I think he,d have been took apart like hatton was against true elite fighters in their primes. We,ll never know. But its a good lesson for fighters up and coming imo...it pays to pick your opponents carefully.
Joe himself in his own auto bio no ordinary joe says They were old past it fighters But lets not listen to the man him self
Arguments on both sides some will say. Hatton beat Castillo and kostya but imo both on slide especially Castillo his two biggest fights he lost but be fair it was elite guys manny and floyd whereas calzaghe took great American hope lacy soul. Beat Kessler in his prime who I thought had good chance beating calzaghe if honest and even tho old beat Hopkins and jones Overall calzaghe at time best division for a long period Hatton not so sure but again both good to watch
I'm not sure Calzaghe's an ATG. ATG's are generally considered to be the top 100 of all time. It's debatable. To rank him as an ATG then he definitely has to be placed on the lower end of the list.
Neither were overated and both were great ambassadors of British boxing , both better than all the british world champions since.
Castiilio turned up for the pay check which he owed most of it out for failing to make weight for a previous fight iirc
hatton was no doubt a good fighter, but was arguably not even the best at his weight in the uk, let alone the world. the two times he stepped up to people considered elite he was badly beaten and not even competitive.
Can’t take you seriously, sorry. Disingenuous at best. Length of time following boxing is irrelevant and a weak attempt to lend credibility to your nonsense.
If only Hatton and Calzaghe had the same nostrils as Chris Eubank Snr, they would have both been ATG at snorting
Not over rated. Both were top fighters at their peaks. Nobody is saying the're the GOAT. They're rated correctly.
