Amen. We've went over Calzaghe's resume too often on this forum but in my opinion it is very solid. And the Hopkins win at the end of Calzaghe's career, that is criminally underrated. Hopkins had a very solid career after Calzaghe, and he pulled out everyone of his considarable bag of tricks in the Calzaghe fight. Calzaghe adapted the range and timing of his shots, used his world class footwork to pressure the older man and pulled off the win. Awful fight, but pure class from the Welshman.
Hatton was a very good fighter for his era but fell short of expectations for some, so probably was overrated a little by some during his prime, he honestly never stood a chance vs Mayweather kind of crazy with hindsight to think some thought he had a chance. But I think he's now pretty much rated where he should be. I am not a Calzaghe fan, I think he wasted much of his prime, didn't take risks when he should have, was content to just be WBO champion for far too long. But if anything I think he might be underrated by some, his resume doesn't match his talent or ability. I never questioned his ability had him a big favourite vs Lacy, expected him to KO Lacy in 7 rounds. Calzaghe I believe could of achieved far more had he shown the desire earlier in his career.
I was not a fan of either but Hatton went in with a PRIME Pac and Mayweather and took it to them... both are top UK boxers but not top WORLD level
I've been back and forth on Calzaghe over the years, but ultimately I think he deserves recognition as one of the greatest fighters ever from these shores. Although he could have fought more top names, his "wilderness years" were not as bad as some make out. When he was supposedly wasting his career away, he was still regularly beating former/future titlists and top 10 fighters, most of them convincingly. His win over Hopkins was not the most electrifying fight, but few British fighters have a name that good on their resume. For all the talk about Hopkins' age, he was coming off big wins, and looked spectacular in the fight directly afterwards. If Kovalev gets credit for battering an ancient Hopkins in 2014, Calzaghe deserves his props for getting the W six years earlier. Throw in the wins over a peak Kessler, unbeaten Lacy and a still useful Eubank, along with the long unbeaten record, and that's a very tight resume indeed. I'm not sure whether Hatton is "overrated" or not, mainly because he's as famous for his losses as his wins. I don't think too many people these days elevate him beyond what he was - a genuine world champ with a signature win over one of the division's greats, but who ultimately fell some way short against two of the best fighters of his era. He fought enough people of different levels and styles to properly evaluate his standing, so I don't think there are too many credible arguments to significantly upgrade him to ATG status, or downgrade him to just another alphabet titlist. He was obviously better than the Malignaggis and Urangos who held world titles, and not as good as the elite fighters who beat him.
Hatton was 'the man' at 140 though which is a considerable achievement when you consider it was a solid division at the time. Not like the wasteland it is today which I think we can all agree he would dominate now Crawford has moved on up.
Calzaghe was rated number 2 or 3 p4p by a lot of people and outlets for a period with the fighters ahead of him Mayweather and Pacquiao.
Hatton was. I liked him but in my opinion he has his losses vs the ATG's but he dissapointed me because he never went at those Bradley/Alexander/Khan type level guys etc. Its like wins over ok guys and losses vs ATG's Calzaghe in my opinion really would have benefitted from 1-2 more wins over B+ level guys like say he had beat glen johnson one of the times that fight was mooted then whooped Froch on the way out i don't think there would be any question about him. As is though i do belive calzaghe to be an ATG talent and one of the best from the UK who's resume didnt quite live upto his talents
Agree there i remember seeing ricky doing a training vid showing how yo throw a body shot and just watching it made you want to evacuate your bowls
Oh you've been following boxing since before Hatton was born? Well then, just end the thread, this man has all the answers. From some of the comments I've seen you make in the short time I've been participating on this forum I'd suggest that's a lot of wasted years buddy.
Calzaghe is an ATG fighter and the greatest at 168 imo. Hatton is HOF bound and rightfully so. Both had excellent careers.
If neither Calzaghe or Hatton are world level then when they where ruling their respective divisions who would you have considered "world level"?
Bradley beat Witter in '08/ Alexander beat Witter in '09. Bradley had his first defence against Edner Cherry whilst Hatton was facing Pacquiao. Bradley and Alexander wasn't even mentioned when Hatton was fighting as legitimate threats....not Hatton's fault. I'm not even going to waste my time on the glass chinned one.
