Lol ,yep think Kenny may not get his crown jewels as crushed here Longhhorn but his ribs will take a battering. Kenny gives Chavez a boxing lesson for at least a few rounds IMO .Ken had the skills and smarts to do that ,but Chavez been the relentless machine he is doesn't let up .Second half of the fight sees Buchanan s lead slipping away .By the Championship rounds ,Kens just looking to survive .Which he does ..just .Mexico wins by a unanimous ,but Chavez knows He's being in a fight .
Ken will win the first 4 rounds and then start taking those powerful shots from Chavez. A prime Chavez will break Ken down until it is stopped by Kens Corner after the 10th. Ken is one of the greatest fighters in that division. His only weakness is in power punching swarmer's. As much as I actually favor Ken in many matchups, Chavez would be his Achilles.
No way would Buchanan be looking to survive in the championship rounds, his 15 physical endurance and stamina were android-like in the vein of Sanchez and Saldivar, his work-rate usually driving to its peak beyond the 12th round as against Navarro and both times against Laguna (the first time in ridiculous heat). It was probably a more important trait for him than his lauded jab, footwork and movement. He was ox-strong too and flint hard to boot, even Duran's onslaught from the opening bell didn't take the steam out of his legs late on even though he took heavy punishment. That said, everything considered, it's fair to pick Chavez against him, albeit in a great, great fight I'd wager.
Tin, I would take Buchanan over JC in a tight 15 rounder. But excellent post on your part regardless.
Very possible mate, I wouldn't be at all shocked. I used to favour Ken clearly a few years back when I was high on him but have since come around to thinking that it would be very close with JCC maybe having a very slight edge. I respect your opinion greatly though.
I think Buchanan takes this .Has the jab and movement to offset Chavez and more importantly has the durability to survive Chavez's bodypunches. Buchanan had a strong jab that wasn't merely to score points- it was a hard damaging punch .
Buchanan was one of my favorite fighters in the day, I met him when he was training in NYC & I saw him live a few times, excellent boxer who could hurt you. Chavez was a methodical beast, smart fighter. This would be a classic match & Chavez should win in a 15 rd battle but Ken fights competetivly. I remember asking Nat Fleicher of Ring magazine how he rated Ken Buchanan, he said he is "very good but not great" funny but he said the same thing about Ali at the time. He felt Louis,Dempsey & Johnson were better & probaly a few others. Chavez in close decision 12 or 15
Based on another thread, I have changed my mind on this. Chavez would not be able to hurt Buchanan as much as Duran did. Ill take Kenny in this war, he wins via Split or UD.
I would love to take Kenny and his excellent boxing in this match but can't, Camacho was faster then Ken and had abit more sting on his punches but neither helped against Chavez. Ken's legs wouldn't wear out as Hector's did but he would still not be able to keep Julio at bay in a hard fought but clear loss for Buchanan.
