Bryant Jennings - 7 rounds Tony Thompson - 6 rounds Malik Scott - Decision David Allen - 7 rounds They're the 4 best, well only, known names on his resume. He couldn't even get rid of Scott, and took 7 to get rid of Allen, whilst on whatever gear he was found to have in his system. Wilder's best win, no doubt, but let's have some perspective please before labelling Ortiz as some kind of 'beast'..... And please don't mention a win over Ortiz in the same sentence as Joshua's, or more impressively Fury's, over Wlad. The other interesting point to make, is that no-one on his resume carries world-level power, let alone elite level.
Ortiz was exactly what we thought he would be a skilled old fat Cuban who can really fight , for 8 rounds ...
38 - 39 years of age is old for 12 rounds of boxing. He did extremely well for an old guy but I think his age was a factor.
George Foreman fought until he was 48 and went the distance with guys like Holyfield a all time great and Tommy Morrison a guy who people love to call glass chin which I think his hilarious. But what is a fact is he had a great punch.
Yep been saying the same prior to the fight even being made. Ortiz had a worse resume than Wilder, people riding the fact that he disposed of Jennings far quicker than Wlad but conveniently ignoring the rest of his resume. Ortiz is good but he's no monster.
Some salty people on here. Hate is strong! Just enjoy what was a decent fight and let's look forward to AJ v Wilder! Stop with all the hate
I expected Wilder to win and said before Ortiz wasn't as good as some were saying even before he fought Scott. The flaws in Ortiz's game were apparent before the Scott fight the Scott and Allen fights just confirmed them for me. People massively overrated the Jennings win. Jennings basically stood and traded with him, first thing I look at in assessing a fighter is footwork and it's clear he's a plodder so a stationary target like Jennings would always flatter Ortiz's style of boxing. Throw in the fact he's more comfortable counter punching on the back foot and fights at one pace you have a boxer who can be out boxed. Styles makes fights and Ortiz has styles he struggles with. But having said that Ortiz is still in my mind a top 5-6 heavyweight even after last nights loss. Yes he can struggle with certain styles but he'd also beat almost anyone that was stupid enough to stand and trade with him. So while he wasn't the monster some made him out to be, he isn't a pretender either.
Yeah well thats right. To me, Ortiz was doing fine until he gassed. Wilder deserves a lot of credit for him gassing but I cant help but go back to Ortiz turning 40 sometime this year and fighting an athlete in his prime who is Wilder.
Prime Wilder almost got beat by an old fat man with no speed. And for the most part, the other 39 opponents were also fat guys, whether young or old, with no speed. He struggled against an opponent he's supposed to be demolishing. Ortiz was made for him. We've seen so many times that a slow man is easy work for Wilder. I think of this fight as showing just how average wilder actually is. Everything was setup perfectly for him to win this, and he still almost blew it. And yes, you are right. Who has Ortiz even fought? Two guys who haven't even fought anyone of note, and Wilder is now getting a crazy amount of credit he simply doesn't deserve.
I'm giving Wilder credit for the way he pulled his victory off and for my newfound respect for his heart and chin - not for the caliber of his opponent. If he goes back to feasting on bums (which he shouldn't) then yes, the hate will continue.
Ortiz isn't some monstrous 1 punch KO artist, but he's far from the plodder that most Wilder critics made him out to be either. With Wlad out of the picture, him and Povetkin are probably the most fundamentally sound fighters in the division right now. It's a shame we didn't get to see more of him 5-6 years ago.
He is technically one of the best fighters in the division but he's still a plodder. Plodder doesn't mean his some crude slugger, just means he isn't light on his feet or very effective at cutting off the ring.
I think he has pretty decent footwork, and is a good fighter on the range as well. When he's in full survival mode, Malik Scott is capable of making anyone look like a plodder.
Ortiz was bouncing on his toes a few times in the fight but it's been a long time since he last fought as an amateur.
