Carter could crack and was a hard hitting middle weight. How would a prime Carter (say the one who stopped Griffith) do vs

    Marvin Hagler
    Thomas Hearns
    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Roberto Duran

    all fights at middleweight.

Well seeing that he lost against British journeyman Harry Scott probably not very well.

Ten fights with each, he goes 0-40.

Carter's famous pre-EGriffith fight quote: "No WW in the world, belongs in the ring with me".

He should be a fairly heavy underdog against all of them.

The Carter that stopped Griffith was running on all cylinders and looked good as did the version that fought Benton. The Benton fight was very close and Carter was punching fast hard and precise in that fight.
One reason Carter's record looked like #### is because he was an alcoholic and a night owl. He was also a small MW that being said. I can't see him beating any of these guys at there best. His best hope would be pulling a Barklay type upset on Hearns with a 1 in a million shot but he didn't have Barklays size. So no don't see it happening maybe against a lesser tier bunch but not these 4.

Carter vs Duran at MW....would like to see the "pre-fight" staredown.

Hed lose to all of them. The Griffith fight is another of those rare occasions like Quarry-Chuvalo that Id bet Griffith would beat Carter 9 out of 10 times it just so happened that they fought that one time Carter won. In fact that result is much flukier than Quarry-Chivalo IMO. Carters record wasnt just spotty because he was an alcoholic. He just wasnt that great. He was a one trick pony who ran out of ideas if he couldnt stop or intimidate you. Nevermind that a couple of his biggest wins were supposed to have been fixed in his favor.

Griffth was beatable at that point in his career...losses & close decision victories to Rodriquez, Manuel Gonzalez, plus a controversial win over Mr. Tiger. I think E.Griffith got better at MW post the 2 Benvenuti losses.
    (Tiger vs Griffith I)
    • Judge Castellano's scorecard was 7-7-1 in rounds but went to supplemental scoring.
    • The decision was roundly booed.
    • 17 out of 22 sportswriters thought Tiger won the fight)

1963-12-20 : Emile Griffith 151½ lbs lost to Rubin Carter 155 lbs by TKO at 2:13 in round 1 of 10
Location: Civic Arena, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U
    • Griffith, the World Welterweight Champion, met Carter in a ten-round non-title bout.
    • Carter signed a contract to come in at 157 pounds, give or take a pound.
    • "No welterweight has any business in the ring with me," Carter said before the fight.
    • Griffith was a slight betting favorite.
    • This was the first time Griffith was stopped.
    • The Associated Press reported:
Carter, the No. 2 ranked middleweight contender, floored Griffith with a vicious left hook shortly after the two fighters had broken from a clinch. Griffith beat the count but was obviously hurt and put both hands to his head before referee Buck McTiernan waved Carter in again. Carter moved in swiftly and raked the champion with a series of lefts and rights to the head, sending him to the canvas for the second time. Griffith managed once again to get to his feet, but McTiernan ruled he was unable to continue and awarded the fight to Carter at 2:13 of the first round.

Carter was extremely dangerous but limited .. despite his astonishing build he was often poorly trained .. in addition he was really a jr. middleweight fighting at 160 ..

Hagler , a natural middle weight all time great stops him ..

Carter would have a puncher's chance against Hearns as pretty every decent middleweight did but you have to favor Tommy.

Duran was hit or miss at 160, losing to guys like Robbie Simms if not motivated .. Motivated he beats him by decision pretty cleanly ..

Ray too fast and too good .. even outside his best weight .. pulls away by decision of a later stoppage ..

You are talking apples and oranges. Im not saying that Griffith was unbeatable. But the guys you listed as examples of him struggling were two hall of famers and one of the slickest most negatove fighters in history that Griffith lost a one round swing to in that guys home town and dominated in the return. In fact you can argue that Griffith didnt lose to any of the guys you listed at all. But again, thats not the point, its how Griffith lost. Nobody ever in his entire career stopped Griffith like that and I submit that 9 out of 10 times Carter couldnt do it either. If Carter doesnt stop Griffith hes not beating him. He just wasnt that good. The guy lost to worse fighters than Griffith on a regular basis throughout his entire short career. He simply wasnt anything special.

Loses decisively to Hagler and Leonard. Has a chance against Hearns and Duran but is the underdog against both.
