Forty fights and last nights was his first real live opponent.

His health seemed fine. He was struggling for much of the fight because Ortiz has superior skills, especially wrt counterpunching. Seemed to me that as the fight wore on, Ortiz lost a lot of snap in his punches and slowed down just enough to become a more accessible target for Wilder’s rights. At that point Wilder started catching him with hard straight rights that he’d been reluctant to throw earlier.

Btw, where did you hear that Wilder has the flu? I noticed that one of the commentators mentioned that he’d allegedly had stomach problems at some point in his camp midway through the fight (around the time you edited your earlier post to mention his health), but i haven’t seen or heard anything else about his ailments before then or since.

It really is something that the man feels comfortable coming in at that weight against today's behemoths. I'm around 17 stone but would feel small and underpowered around true SHW's. To fight at 214lb and to knock 240+lb fighters out consistently is an incredible feat from Wilder.

I must admit I'm loving that a sub 215 pounder is arguably the baddest man on the planet. Loving it.

No-one can take that away from you. Mind you he's not lineal or Ring rated at the top yet.

    Thank you.
    Yep, you're right.
But not only might he take the throne, many are starting to believe he belongs there.

He could prove the best of the current bunch. If Fury ever surfaces again i suspect he'd beat Wilder. I'd make Joshua a small favorite over him too. Time will tell. I have an open mind about it all.

Best thing to do , keep a open mind about. Let a few fight s and years go past before really coming to a conclusion . Been following boxing long enough now to realise that today's big thing can be next years big let down .

I never make a definitive opinion until a fighter has retired. Look at Kovalev, a while back some on here were saying he beats atg heavyweights!

How many times has he boxed at under215lbs? For my money a 215pounder is big enough for anybody,if he is good enough, but a 185pounder or thereabouts has to be very, very special to compete with them.I'm thinking only Dempsey qualifies .

I think Wilder represents what a lot of people have been thinking and saying for quite a while.

Lean athleticism can be your friend.

Is the argument that because a 201 cm, 214 lbs fighter is succesful at HW today, a 179 cm, 187 lbs fighter could also be?

For those of you who say Wilder is a throwback, how many sub 220 lbs fighters have you seen with his height, reach and power?

Absolutely .A lot names have had that big build up and hype surrounding them .A few of em justified , but how many aren't ? Kovalev is a very good example.
Let's come back in a few years then we'll see .
