It’s a different market, a larger canvas, and you have to understand it to have a chance to promote successfully in the U.S.

In the UK, it’s soccer and boxing and ... cricket? In the U.S., boxing is way further down the scale with many more sports stars. A Floyd Mayweather made it as a PPV superstar but needed Oscar to hand over the torch. There’s only room for a few U.S. fighters, if that many, to break through to the mainstream.

 

A lot more because he has the ability to promote the brand in a way the yank promoters dont

 

Hearn just lucked out with Joshua who could have signed with anyone and would have still be the star that he is in the UK.

hmm not sure about that there is a good chance that golf & rugby are bigger than boxing, darts does very well over here also. We have times of year that certain sports are more popular also ie golf is huge come ryder cup time, Tennis during wimbledon, rugby when its 6 nations, darts when in the pub !! F1 also still does big numbers in the UK and has its own sky channel.

UK is pretty diverse with its sports to be fair.

Football, Rugby Union, Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Snooker, Motor Racing, Rugby League all come before Boxing in terms of TV viewings. (old data, but boxing is quite far down the list in the UK too)

But yeah Its harder in American as people have to travel further, in terms of ticket sales. Eubank vs Groves in Manchester for example, all the Londoners still go, its only a few hours.

 

Ah but a lot of that is “for two weeks” or whatever.

Apart from futbol, what sport does UK have where it’s not more a national thing where fans have a team to cheer for that’s ‘their team’?

In the U.S., fans develop loyalty to a professional football team, a basketball team, a baseball team. Then they have college sports which are huge, so fans also have football and basketball (the two big college sports) teams that they are absorbed with from August through early April.

Every week, hundreds of basketball games are on TV, probably 200 football games.

In the UK, a boxer who makes it to or near the top is kind of a national-interest guy — he “represents” Britain in international competition and people rally around that. It’s just not the same in the US, where unless a boxer somehow captures the public’s fancy in a big way (Mayweather, whom people rooted for or rooted against and would pay big money to see him win or lose, being the only truly “over” recent example, or De la Hoya before him) it just doesn’t move the needle.

It’s just a different dynamic.

 

Rubgy, Darts and F1. In the UK AJ Tyson Fury and Amir Khan are prob the only two boxers that the average Joe has heard of thats it. If I were to ask the guy sitting infront of me in work who Kell Brook, Billie Joe Saunders, Carl Frampton etc are he wouldnt have a clue.

We have a diehard fanbase and when it comes to AJ a big casual following but thats it. Up in Scotland most folk will have heard of Burns but not many at all will have heard of Taylor who is a much better prospect.

Sport is very diverse in the UK especially in schools

 

Hard to say. How much is Miller worth now he's with Hearn? How much did he increase Ortiz's worth?

There are a lot of different ways to look at it really, I doubt you'll find a definitive answer

It's really not that different from the US

1-2 household names, 4-5 "big-ish" stars and then everyone else.

The reason wilder isnt huge in america is because of 2 reasons

1. Lewis and then k2 beating the **** out of all thier guys for 15 years killed americans faith in heavyweights

2. Until Ortiz (who even he isn't that great REALLY) Wilder had fought nobody

The yanks are starting to get a bit brave again now that wilder is finally looking like a decent fighter and theres nobody anywhere near as imperious as K2 or Lewis who would obviously beat him if they fought.

There may only be one genuine superstar in AJ but the reason British boxing is “bigger” is because even the lesser shows tend to be so well attended.
