Never been a fan of Wilder and still don't care for him. Like many on this forum, I wanted to see Ortiz KO him in the 7th. Some just take it to the extreme with the hating though. I'm a fan of technique and dedication to routine, when Wilder goes reckless he gets away with a lot of illegal punches and throws his opponent to the ground. I guess other hw's have gotten away with just as worse. With saying all that, Wilder has to be respected and is extremely dangerous. Wilder has the potential to KO any HW in history. Including Joshua and Tyson.
No one disputes that Wilder is a big puncher, but considering Ortiz age ( 39 this March ) and gassing later, I could name dozens of heavyweights who could have stopped that version of Ortiz. Wilder has fought two top ten opponents Ring Magazine opponents. One, he took the distance, and I question who Stiverne beat to get ranked into Ring Magazine's top ten. The second was at least 38 years old, and Wilder survived by getting crucial break from the ref when he needed it most without any cuts or injuries. Wilder also landed rabbit punches, which hurt Ortiz, and it took ten rounds to stop Ortiz. So his biggest win is tainted with fouls and a key break by the ref. The value of the win at Ortiz's age diminishes the win. If Ortiz fights on and can win some significant matches the value of the win will mean far more! You could say Wilder isn't quite as chinny as his critics thought or hoped, but it's clear he's not a good boxer and is gun shy to engage vs. a puncher. Wilder obviously waited for Ortiz to age before taking the match. If Ortiz was 2-3 years younger, I think Ortiz would have won. With momentum on his side, whoever Wilder picks for his next opponent will tell me everything. No more non-top ten opponents please. Based on what I saw both Joshua and Povetkin would have beaten him last night. Parker? Not sure 50/50. I'd probably rate Wilder #3 or #4 in the division as of right now.
I think last night provided most to believe that a peak Ortiz may have finished him off, in the same way that the Joshua vs Klitschko fight gave us reason to believe that a peak WK would have finished Joshua. But I don't hate either guy. They're possibly the best around right now. With Parker being an untested possibilty (though I wouldn't envisage AJ or Wilder struggling with Hughie Fury). Maybe Tyson Fury deserves another look. Simply don't know.
Wilder is an interesting proposition. He doesn't know how to fight, which isn't a big deal generally, but if you are a boxer it will almost always come back to bite you. But he hits so hard with the right hand that he could conceivably never have to pay for not knowing how to fight. On the other hand, I may not be giving him enough credit because I think it is plain that he is doing something right. He doesn't seem to do much early, but he seems to be observing and paying attention and, when he either sees or creates the opening he wants, he capitalizes.
Well put. I think that is a fair assessment of Wilder at this stage. Whether he gets better or worse with time remains to be seen.
Thanks. If he's serious I hope he fights Pulev, or Miller next as both are in the top ten. Pulev is a bit past his best, but probably a better boxer than Ortiz was at age 38-39. Miller is over weight, but decent enough. Kuzmin, or Kean would not be a bad pick either, but both can punch so I doubt he picks them. Believe it or not, I think 4-0 Hrgovic, who's now ranked in the top 40 at box rec would defeat Wilder.
I just can't believe all this Wilder talk on here it's delusional lol. The so called skills he displayed the other night against an Ortiz who I think saw 39 about 5 yrs ago were dismal. I just don't see any of it.
Stop whining about him throwin ortiz. He did it once by accident (when they got tangled up) and never did it again. In fact this is the first time ive ever seem him do it. Ali threw bonavena to the ground foreman threw scott ledoux. I love both those guys to death but they got away with plenty. Ali grabbed the back of the neck several times, foreman shoved nearly every guy who brought pressure to him. Wladmir klitshko got points deducted for excessive holding in the david haye fight and also threw him to the ground. His fight with povetkin was practically a wwe match. Tysons opponents frequently complained of elbows, holyfield used headbutts like they were going out of style. Unless youre gonna get on everyones case, quit your hatin and belly aching. Its the hurt business and so far wilder hasnt done anything eggregious compared to some of his beloved predecessors.
Perspective here: Moorer went 2-3 against top ten rated opponents Mercer went 2-4 " " Bowe went 4-1, one of those wins by DQ Tyson in the 90s, 4-3 Foreman, I think, beat one ranked opponent during his comeback 2-0 against top five rated opponents with a decent amount ofwins over 10-20 ranked opponents isn't that bad, even for the 90s crop.
