That's what happens in boxing. You get this little advantages when you're a big name. He was also let away with landing some shots after the bell twice.

 

It was odd, and I definitely understand the paranoia because, well, this is boxing, but there's a chance that the referee was just a little paranoid and felt like double checking because he suspected a concussion or something.

 

This is a more valid complaint than the scores. But as someone else noted, it's what you get when you are the bigger name. AJ will get the same advantage if and when he ever faces Wilder.

The ref should have checked between rounds, if the guy can't answer the bell in a coherent state you stop the fight, but the ref was helping him.

 

The referee could be innocent here, it may well be that he thought the Dr normally did this at the start of the round and not during the allotted 1 min between rounds like every other Dr in Boxing history.

Maybe he also thinks it’s OK to throw your opponent down then try to stand over him and taunt him. He might be mistaken in thinking it’s alright for the Champion to throw a punch after the bell. Also rabbit punching is allowed if you’re taller than your opponent and cuffing with the inside of the glove is OK too. If you’re the champ it’s acceptable to grab and clinch for extended periods when you’re hurt and ready to go down, no need to seperate the fighters just let him get away with it.

Who knows. All we know is that based on his behavior, allowing Wilder to hit after the bell, allowing excessive clinching, allowing a judo throw, allowing elbows to the face, and giving extra recuperation time, there is absolutely no doubt that he definitely wanted Wilder to win.

Thd WBC must’ve had the ref very aware of Wilder close to being KO’d, and the ref so he was still stunned at the beginning of the eighth and he took action; he illegally gave him an extra 20 seconds to recover, instead of letting Ortiz finish him off
