Damiani was the WBO belt holder in 90,so if Bruno had stepped out of semi retirement after Tyson , and challenged him for the title how's it go . Bruno comes in as a slight favourite following the gutsy showing against Tyson , but Damiani s confident .
Bruno didn`t put in a gutsy display vs Tyson, if you look at Reemus Boxing Tyson`s weaknesses on youtube Bruno doesn`t feature once because he didn`t exploit Tyson`s flaws at all.
He didn't do that bad , at least compared to most of his opponent s up to then .Berbick , Holmes , Tubbs. , Williams and spinks all went out earlier. And he wasn't layed out on the canvas at the end .
Similar level fighters in my opinion, the big difference that Bruno was given every chance in the world and Damiani fewer. Both feasted on deteriorated and past prime opposition while building themselves up, but both were indeed dangerous and competent heavyweights.
Holmes threw good jabs at Tyson Bruno was just pawing and Holmes was 38 years old, Tubbs did much better in his 1st round vs Mike and actually won that round then made the mistake of fighting Tyson on the inside, you have more of an argument with Williams because he was fighting the same shoddy Tyson that was no longer being trained Rooney. Spinks did some clever stuff in his 91 secs but Tyson gave a career best performance for that defining fight
And Bruno , being the biggest name in heavy weight UK boxing would get the big build up .But I give Damiani a excellent chance of pulling off a upset. Frank may be over confident after Tyson , and may find himself lagging as the fight goes on .Could Frank pull out the big equalizer when he needs it ?
Interesting fight .I was very interested in Damiani back in the late 80s early 90s .He didn't look much of a fighter bit fleshy funny hair cut but was a good fighter skillful with decent power.There was talk of a fight with Bruno and mason back in the day but it never happened .The fight would of been a good one Damiani was more fluid and think he might of got in front on the cards his faster jab against Franks slower ramrod but I think Bruno would catch him with a plie driver right off the jab at some point dropping Francesco and ending the fight .
I can remember talk at one point of holy field fighting Damiani , don't quote me on it but think it was around 91 .But he ended up fighting smoking Bert instead. I'd have to give that to Holy by ko but maybe not easy peasy by any means.
Damiani was quite slick and he would definitely had a chance if fight goes the distance where Bruno tires late. No need to go to the scorecards as Bruno heavy jab and power would slow down FD and fights come to conclusion in 8 rds.
Bruno would have to KO Damiani early, in my opinion. This was well within his capabilities but less evident against class opposition, post-Tyson 1. At the same time, I think Damiani could apply a lot of pressure and sooner or later bring about Bruno's unraveling. At which point, I think Damiani has the chance to take a Decision, with the potential to stop Frank, along the way.
I agree with this. Frank was more physical, Damiani was a better all round boxer. Bruno would have to get him while he was fresh and before Damiani figured him out and started stringing punches together. Despite Damiani looking like a bit of a giant dumpling, he had a pretty good gas tank and chin and could keep chugging away even late in a fight. That was a good fight but some strange scoring, with Damiani winning only on account of the points deductions from Page. I have to say, Damiani was workmanlike but very capable of quickly getting to grips with his opponent's mode, in situ; then putting together assaults with great effect. He was prone to taking a few in return, however.
