Francesco was a good fighter skillful with decent power if he could avoid Tommys early attack boxing on the retreat behind his jab I think Damiani could stop Morrison in about 9 rounds in an upset that would upset the Americans.
Morrison like most muscled heavy fighters would tire early if he threw too many power punches. However against Foreman when he ran and box he showed decent stamina. Tommy would though try to bomb Damiani but FD too slick. Unlike Mercer fight no hail mary left uppercut to bail out Tommy. FD on pts.
Morrison drops paisano mio Damiani with his signature left hook in round 8....the tko follows soon afterwards.
Morrison never KO'd anyone as good as Damiani and I don't suspect he would break precedent here. Meanwhile Damiani boxes his ears off. 80/20 Damiani because sometimes Franesco got a little sloppy or stood in one place after combos and Morrison might get his chance there.
Morrison had sh*t stamina against Foreman. He was gasping for air as he turned and jogged away from the statue formerly known as George Foreman. Name me one time where he pulled off a similar strategy against an even semi live body. There was a reason for this.
50-50 fight, I feel Damiani with more of an American style/corner would have done better but he could outclass Tommy, he could hurt Tommy but Morrison had the left hook that could reach Francesco could go either way
Supposedly he had the training camp of his life for Foreman, actually training "seriously" and dropping alcohol from his regime because his fear of Foreman motivated him to actually train seriously for the fight. They mention that in the recent Morrison ESPN documentary.
I was going to bring that one up but Hipp was a fave of mine and it didn't end well. Not that Hipp, for his less than impressive physique, lacked stamina. He lacked face. Tommy never lacked heart. He just had insane personal problems, mostly brought on by his dad (who bought him a prostitute at 14)... And he didn't have much stamina. And the pec implants could not have helped.
He wins by being slightly quicker afoot than an obese grandpa. If Moorer had taken a page from his game plan we would see foremans comeback in its proper relief.
Much as I can see why you believe this could have been the case, I think 99 times out of 100, Damiani would have out-boxed and Decisioned or KO'd Morrison.
My thinking is that the Italian did ok until he was hurt...then he folded for keeps...a relative tap on the nose...certainly not one of Mercer's best shots...stopped him cold...same thing vs Oliver McCall...two times vs top tier opposition...both good punchers...that indicates to me that Morrison, who hit harder than both McCall and Mercer, could have ruined Francesco's evening with one fast, well placed shot...even if it were thrown in desperation, and even if he was trailing on points....and meanwhile, even though Morrison was somewhat chinny vs the big punchers, I don't think that Damiani was in the league of the big punchers. His chin would be his undoing, IMO...if not for that inability to take a punch. the Italian would have been ok.
The shot that Mercer landed had nothing to do with Damiani's chin or punch resistance; it did smash his nose. If you watch it, the blood is pouring from his nose as he sits on the canvas. The punch didn't land flush but it did a lot of damage.
