1973-74 Foreman vs Wayne Bethea Mike Dejohn Cleveland Williams Nino Valdes Roy Harris Zora Folley Eddie Machen Floyd Patterson
On his best night. Foreman anhilates them all. Machen would be the real fight here, skilled boxer that gave liston lots of trouble, and liston was a more skilled boxer than foreman so if machen boxed like he did against liston he might pull off what Jimmy young did to foreman, but don't get me wrong I'd expect foreman to beat machen most of the time but it would be a tough fight. Cleveland williams could also give him the same challenges he gave liston, foreman sparred williams and regarded him in the top 3 most powerful punchers he fought, so williams obviously left a threateing impression on him. Patterson is the best fighter here by a wide margin, but didn' have the chin or style to be competive with foreman.
Machen is a threat could move and box perhaps Foreman gasses. Folley was good boxer too but was chinny I could see Foreman duplicating what Sonny did, sonny and George were big guys
I agree with most of everything stated here. Machen and Williams are the real wild cards here. Machen was so skilled and cagey, not to mention a real thinking fighter - Foreman's bane with someone who has the tools to pull it off. Not that Folley hasn't the talent, just not the chin as has been stated here already. The other wild card is Cleveland Williams. There is always the notion out there that this could turn into another Foreman-Lyle.
It seemed to me that Lyle had a better chin than Williams....if Williams had Lyle's chin and better stamina, he'd be a real danger to Foreman. The thing would be who goes down first between Foreman and Williams and I think Williams would be the first one to go down and stay down.
Gotta agree that Machen would be the toughest fight here. Williams-Foreman would be a real shootout while it lasts, but can't see it ending any differently than the Williams-Liston fights. Interestingly I read a while back that an attempt was made to match Foreman and Patterson sometime around 1971. I don't remember hearing anything about it at the time, but would have seen it as a replay of the Patterson-Liston fights.
In 1971, an experienced Patterson MAY have been able to take a more novice Foreman. Never underestimate experience and guile.
It would have been interesting to see what might happen if Floyd could get past the early rounds and extend young George. Foreman by that time had Chuvalo among his scalps, so he was very dangerous in the early rounds, and that was when Floyd was most vulnerable. Patterson was better than his Liston fights would indicate, and if he could hit his stride and survive the opening rounds, 1971 would have been his best shot with Foreman. Such a fight would have given Foreman a lot of valuable experience in any event.
